I'm sure other cats do this too, but it always amazes me that all three of mine do this.
Three BIG litter boxes.
One is used only to pee in.
One is for poop.
One is a spare when someone has not stuck to the golden rule and pooped in the pee tray. :ROFLMAO:
But even when I just had Pixie, and she had 2 trays... she always used one to pee, and one to poop.
And never the twain shall meet. :p
Seriously, the third is only used if someone made a mess in the pee tray.
They will go to pee, then step out, go in the other box, and poop.
Litter is the same in all 3 boxes and the boxes are all the same too.

And if one comes to pee, and I'm cleaning the pee-tray, they'll practically cross their legs until the pee tray is ready, instead of going in another one lol.
Toilet hygiene, I guess.

Anyone else's cats do this?

Girls! Toilet hygiene - check.
My crew pee and poop without any toilet hygiene. They have 4 litterboxes and pee and poop in every box

Yep. Mine does this too. I only had 1 box with Elle and she did fine. But since I’m getting another cat soon I went ahead and put out a second box for Jasmine and she has made this designation.

My old man fluffy cat used to walk up and down flights of stairs specifically to poo in one box and pee in another, right up until he got too old to do so. When I saw Madame Emm doing the same I was a bit baffled until I looked it up online. Apparently it's not uncommon. I suspect once we start letting her out of her kitten room at night to roam the house, we'll have one box 100 percent poo and one 100 percent pee. Fine by me--sure makes cleaning easier.

My kitty has two litter trays. She sometimes does both pee and poop in both but usually she has one for pee and one for poop. BUT if I don’t scoop every day she will poop on the floor beside her poop tray!

Mine mix it up. But I have 3 cats and only 2 boxes. I scoop often since I'm home but sometimes I check and there's nothing....then next time I check there's both kinds of deposits in both boxes. My timing sux :)

For all I know 1 or 2 of them want to have one box for pee and one for poo, but all it takes is the 3rd cat to say "naaahhhh" ......

What all 3 of mine do that's funny is they poo with their front paws on the edge of the litter tray and their butt over the litter. The litter trays don't have covers so they have room. The cats walk in the tray, turn around, and step up. They face out. When they're done, they just jump completely out. Then from outside the box, they will prop one front paw on the edge of the tray and use the other front paw to cover their poo. They actually care a lot about not stepping in it, which of course I appreciate.

Yep! This household has three cats, two boys and one girl. Three litter boxes. One is for pee and the other two is for poop. When I'm scooping and cleaning two of them oversee it and jump in as soon as I'm done, sometimes during. This is the way!
