Considering two!

Hi everyone,
I am expecting to get my new kitty in September. Hubby has agreed on two! My breeder said two would be a possibility.

My question:

My husband is allergic and was allergic to my last Sphynx. His Dr. said his allergies would have been from my kitty licking herself, the spit drying on her skin, and then flaking off.

We had carpets removed in our home. His allergies plummeted.

He has agreed on two with the understanding that if he can’t breathe with two, one would have to go.

Has anyone had experience with a loved one with allergies? I would swiffer the floor daily to wipe up dry spit. Does anyone have other suggestions to help with allergies? Part of my discussion with him is that the two kitties would cuddle each other and leave him alone. Raphael loved hubby and they cuddled every day. He only reacted allergy wise if Raphael licked him.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would hate to get two and have to re-home one if it doesn’t work out. Re-homing hubby is not an option!

Oh how exciting! Here in the Netherlands when you are allergic to dogs, cats or trees and grass you can get an immune therapy. You can only do this as long as you don't have pets in your home at that moment. Is that kind of therapy available in Canada? A lot of people here with serveren allergies arr not allergic anymore after this therapy.

my vet told me allergies can actually come from anal glands too when they lick and skin glands, You can ask your vet if daily wipe downs of bumms, and skin with water wipes would help lessen allergies. great idea to ask breeder if can return if there is a severe allergy flare up.

I use a couple of honeywell HPA 300 air purifiers, I get refills of filters and prefilter on amazon for way less and work just as good. I have the same units for about 8 yrs I got online at home depot and they still work fine.

does hubby take allergy meds? my brother came for a visit recently to my moms and is allergic, he got some over the counter allergy product that help.

I know I would not be able to give a kitten back either. That is why I am making sure I am doing everything we can to keep the allergy symptoms down. I don’t know about the allergy therapy that Toa and Ross is talking about but hubby does use allergy pills when necessary. We also have the super filters on our furnace and an air purifier as well. Damp mopping daily also helps. As with Raphael the new kitties wouldn’t be allowed in our bedroom. At least they would have each other to cuddle and I wouldn’t be sleeping in “the cats room” most of the time! Lol

I appreciate all of your comments. Glad I am on the right track. I still have a few months to make a final decision. I just think two kitties will be good company for each other.

@Annejo12 maybe ask a dermatologist about the immune/anti allergy therapy. It is not painful and only takes a few weeks.

@Yoda mom , we have decided on two as long as my breeder has two available. We are on the right track to deal with allergies. Plus my husband pointed out that he really didn’t have issues after we had carpets removed. We haven’t taken this decision lightly with many discussions and strategies together. Plus my breeder suggested live clear kibble from Purina. She said it is meant to reduce allergens. I have sent my vet an email asking if she has heard of cat food perhaps reducing allergens.

The kittens aren’t available until September so there is still time to do more research. It is exciting!

Visited with my friend the vet. He shared that before he went to vet school he was allergic to cats. He took weekly shots to create immunity. He said they were tiny little needles and it only took a few months. Lol. I didnt think I had to ask him if they were successful. He has also lived with many cats over the years…

There are two different ones, one is called Pacagen, and the other is by Clorox called a allergen neutralizer. The Clorox one comes in a room spray and a fabric refresher.

Hi there,

I have had allergies and very severe asthma for most of my adult life. The one thing that helped me tremendously was allergy shots. I still do have allergies and will react to other people’s cats. About 15 years ago I two Devon Rex kittens and thought I made the biggest mistake of my life. I suffered for about three months and then in a relatively short period of time I was just fine with my cats. No allergies.
I have had three Sphynx. One currently that’s 2.5 years and I have another male Sphynx arriving at the end of September. I’ve had no real reactions to them. I do keep them clean and wipe them down with baby wipes when need be. I have no issues at all with my current one.
All of this to say is that over time he should become used to your new kitten(s). Exposure therapy. I would use antihistamines to start and slowly lower the dosage. Wipe down between cleanings with baby wipes.
I’ve had respirologists and allergy specialists tell me in the past that I had to live a life without cats. That will never happen. A life without a Sphynx just isn’t an option for me.

We have the same problem here - one of us is allergic to cats. We found that the worst reactions were caused by direct contact with cat saliva. One huge thing we did, so there can at least be snuggles between the allergee and the allergenn (), is to have a (at least one) sherpa blanket that is fuzzy on one side and fleece material on the other - different colors are helpful. My sphynx prefers the sherpa side, so we keep the blanket folded in half & she slips in the middle. Then, when the allergee wants to snuggle with her, the blanket comes out, sherpa side in the middle, with the cat, & fleece (smooth) side is facing out. This has decreased any immediate physical reaction that happens when one snuggles the kitty nekkid. She also drools when happy, so she always has to have a blanket for snuggles anyway... Lot's of washing of blankets around here & all dirty dishes go directly into the dishwasher. If you drink anything (like cream in tea/coffee) that the kitty likes, be sure to get a lid that will keep the little licker out! Licked mugs will cause swelling of the lips and mouth for my allergee. We will also put a temporary bedsheet over the couch when the allergee is already feeling especially itchy from other environmental factors. Best of luck to you. I can't live without a cat either, so "we" deal with it & I am grateful.
