@Margokay01 sharing thread info of why donskoy and sphynx
should not be bred. They are genetically different etc.

From admins previous info post:

The Donskoy or Don Sphynx and the Canadian Sphynx are two separate types of hairless cats. They are so genetically different the two cannot be bred. The reason they cannot be bred is due to their genetic differences. The Canadian Sphynx carries a Recessive gene while the Don Sphynx carries a Dominant gene.

Hi, there! I may be able to explain the genetic side of things a bit more easily for you!

You already know about dominant and recessive genes, but the puzzle piece thats missing is that they are two different types of hairless genes.

What that means is that they sit in different spots on the genome and dont overlap. Because these two different genes dont overlap, they can not interact with each other.

The Donskoy gene only needs one copy to make a cat shed out most of their hair, so kittens will be born like a Donskoy kitten and shed like a Donskoy cat sheds but will never be hairless completely because they cant have two coppies of the Donskoy gene if one parent is a Canadian sphynx.

Sphynx hairlessness MUST HAVE two coppies to show any level of baldness, so it cant effect the hybrid kittens because they will only have one copy of the gene.

This is why kittens will always be born with hair when you cross the two and may shed out some hair but will never be totally hairless. Its also why and Sphynx crosses with other non Sphynx cats will have fur.

Hope that helped!

That's really interesting. I've learnt a lot from this thread.

Hi i have a question. What would be a result of crossing Donskoy female and Canadian Sphynx? Would the kittens be hairless? I am not planning to do so whatsoever but was just wondering as i have both :) thanks

My Kitten Pharoah. Her mum is the black faced Sphinx and dad peach coloured is a Donskoy/ Devon Rex/ American shorthair mix
It was only after having my kitten DNA tested I found out why she had hair. The lady I got her from thought she had 2 Sphinx parents but dad is a mix of rubber bald Donskoy/ seven Rex / American shorthair and mum is full Sphinx. I live in the north of the UK and I see most of this thread is from the US. I contacted a Donskoy breeder via Facebook called donedon in the US and she confirmed it is dad who has the Donskoy mix and Pharoah has inherited the brush coat version of the breed. Pharoah is 7 months ( being spayed tomorrow as is a family pet) and is losing hair and will continue to lose hair till she is 2 yrs old due to her dads gene being Dominant to mums recessive gene. Will post her journey with hair loss. She could end up half bald half hairless but she is a character and I will love her and care for her an appreciate her uniqueness

I was not aware that this was not to be done and did try it believe me you do NOT want to do this I have a donskoy male and Canadian sphynx female it ended with an emergency c section or my girl may have died. The c section and emergency birth cost me almost 5,000 dollars and ended with a dead litter it was heartm breaking as my girl kept going back to the room where her labor began and she literally searched the room constantly for the lost babies. If you care and love your sphynx please don't make the same mistake it still makes me cry!

My cat Pharoah is a cross Canadian/ donskoy. Her owner did not know the father was donskoy as he was rubber bald and sold as a sphinx. Very few people have heard of donskoy in the UK and presume it is a Canadian sphinx. Pharoah was born with a brush coat. Lost it over summer and has regrown a sticky undercoat fur over winter which mats easily. I have had her DNA tested and she is perfectly healthy but her coat is problematic and means she needs regular grooming/ trimming. I have a full donskoy kitten too but she has very round eyes unlike the almond donskoy eyes so I have purchased another DNA kit for her as I suspect she is also half Canadian half donskoy. As Canadians have recessive genes and donskoy dominant genes the coat will always be determined by the donskoy. I work in human genetics and to be honest breeding these two together most likely gives genetic variation and less issues than with pure breeds. Pharoah is a carrier for 2 Sphinx traits but her donskoy genes mean she will not suffer from these conditions. Cross breeding is most likely healthier for the cat but it will always be a cross not a pure breed
