Hello All! When reading the results of the poll on how many sphynx people own, I noticed that a huge majority of us own a single sphynx. I am very curious as to why- is it because folks want a single sphynx, or is it due to the $1000 plus price tag for most of them?

When my husband and I got Vito we weren't able to afford a kitten. He had started a new job the week before and we found Vito for $750. It was a big stretch for us but we got him.

Then I started looking for a breeder that I was comfortable with. I found her 5-6 months after we got him. Hubby and I have since split and I am waiting for a specific breeding. I haven't paid for kitten yet due to the cost of setting up a new household but that is ok. Baby won't be born for 3-4 months.

Mowai wants so much attention and is constantly with me. I think I'd feel bad if I had to divide the attention between 2.

I was just telling my husband today i cant imagine having more than one sphynx. Harold is sooooo cuddly and needy. I cant imagine dividing that between him and another. I also have 4 dogs:) he has tons of company, and playmates. I do not need another to keep him company.
Thats why i only want one!

We have 2 elderly furry cats and Cleo came to us through the adoption group at our local Petsmart. She cost much less than a papered cat from a breeder, but our getting her was serendipity-we weren't looking for any kittens, but fell in love when we saw her and her sister. I want another Sphynx, but we are kind of waiting until 18-year-old Kermit dies. Or until serendipity strikes again....

I'm not allowed another :( Hubby says we have enough pets (Kiki plus 3 Chinese Cresteds) I will get more in the future though, but for now Kiki can have all my special kitty attention.

I had answered one at the time, but now I have two. Originally Ziggy, then Gizzy, was supposed to be a companion for our Cornie, Ash, and we thought two kittens would be too much for him with his heart and age. Then along came Toothy and an opportunity to rescue and help a sphynx, so now we have two.

I had 3 fur babies when we found Emma at the local shelter. 4 cats is one higher than our max cat capacity, but I do not plan on getting any other breed after finding Emma :Adore:

Ok so this post doesn't apply to me at the moment but....I'd say accessibility, quality of breeder, and $$ played a huge part in getting my kitties. It took 6 years to convince my husband to go with a breeder. I had been looking into breeders longer than that and I searched local adoptions listings and so forth and many of the Sphynx I had found where from BYBs, not healthy (continuing skin problems, heart or behavior issues) and people still wanted 1000 + for them :( I just couldn't justify the $$ and heartache with adopting a sick kitty. Not to mention many of these kitties were several hours drive from me!!!

When I answered the pole, I just had Sealy. I thought he'd have enough companionship with our 4 small dogs so we just got him. 6 or 7 months later I was looking for a sister for him because he seemed lonely or something. Hadyn came home at the beginning of September and I've never regretted the decision 1 bit. They both seek out attention and snuggle with me, but they like to play/fight and snuggle together 75% of the time. After seeing them together, I'm a true believer in them having their own Sphynx buddy. Sealy was fine by himself for the first 10 or 11 months we had him, but he seems so much happier with Hadyn here now. Even if they weren't so expensive we'd still only have 2 though.

At the time I voted in the poll we only had Lucifer. I think cost and having our hands full with our first pet together made us just get one. But we soon realised we felt he was lonely when we weren't home and after a year we brought Samael home too. Glad we did

I kind of jumped in the deep end and got two adult rehomes :)
Having said that at $1600 to $2000 each desexed on the pet register, If I had of looked at a kitten I still wouldn't have one. I got my two boys for a very low amount. The person rehoming was going to waiver any cost but I thought his original asking price was more than reasonable.

I was a little gun shy of jumping into two at once. plus with everything I read with the nail grooming, ear cleaning, bathing....I wasn't so sure I could handle more than 1 or bite off more than I could chew.

For me it was both the price, and the fact that I wanted to make sure I could properly care for one after reading about having to bathe them, clean their ears, trim their nails, etc....also, after reading up on what handfuls they can be, I thought one would be plenty at the time, as I had an elderly cat that wasn't used to having a kitten around.
Now, I would love to one day get two sphynx kittens. My husband says I am nuts, but like I told him, If I can handle Ra and and all the antics he is always up too...two should be a breeze (except for maybe bath time) :Wink2:

We might get another in a couple of years once we are in a house, but for now we have just the one. I can't imagine trying to find another place to put another litter box in our small condo, and molly is SUCH a spoiled sucky baby that we are just kind of enjoying her for now.

Getting Bea was not planned. My vet emailed me about her needing a home only a few weeks after my furry cat Gracie died (got her when old, only had her for 20 months). I wasn't planning on getting another cat or 2 for months yet. Bea's history is being with little kids, a dog and 2 other cats, and she didn't get along with that crowd, so I'm keeping her by herself. I'd get another furry cat to keep her company, otherwise, in a heartbeat. The cost of a Sphynx may mean Bea is the only one I ever have, though I think they are beautiful cats. And I'd love to have one with the cuddly personalities I read about on here.

Hello All! Such interesting answers - it seems that high cost IS quite an issue. I have 3 sphynx, and enjoy them very much! They play together (bicker a bit, too!) , and every evening while I sit and watch tv they all pile up on my lap. I love it! My husband does not like cats, so I worked a ton of overtime to pay for them so as not to take money out of our tight budget! We also have 8 dogs, and my husband and I are both dog LOVERS!

My answer is pretty similar to everyone else. The first major concern was price. It is very hard to save up that much money when you have other things that you have to pay for. My second concern was all the maintenance that they required. I wanted to make sure that I would want to take care of one before I got another. Now after having her for over a year and saving up some money, I can finally get another! Akali is my only pet so she could really use a companion and plus I want another one. I cannot see myself getting any other breed than the sphynx. They are completely worth every penny!

Now that I have one I will only ever for the rest of my life own Sphynx! For me, I'm new to the breed, but I can tell you that already I see another in my future:). These cats are so amazing that once you own one, even if you were originally concerned with the $, all of a sudden that doesn't matter anymore cause you're crazy in love with them:Adore:

I completely agree here! As much as I would love two naked little butts running around my house, I really think I would suffocate! Boogie, from day one, has been such a needy little monkey. We have two dogs and three other cats besides him. I do think if I didn't have any other animals I definitely would have gotten another naked friend for him. But like Farley said, I couldn't imagine dividing up the attention
