My two kittens finally came home on August 6th!! Everything was going great for a while, then just recently on August 12th problems started happening. My kitties seem sick and the two vets I have gone too don't have sphinx experience.. If anyone knows of a good vet, or can give me advice on what might be wrong with the kittens please share! I am a new sphynx owner and have been overly stressing myself out over this. I have already spent $600 in vet bills and still have sick kittens with no answers!!
My seal mink girl (Vera) developed a URI and was put on antibiotics.. She is feeling fine now. The vet gave me the same kind of antibiotic (Clavamox) for my other kitten in case he caught the same thing. Then suddenly a couple days later my lilac mink boy (Oscar) began feeling crappy but had completely different symptoms that are scaring me..
Day 1: He started having severe coughing attacks along with vomiting that was (or seemed) unrelated to eating. Every time he woke up from a nap he would start crying really loud and would vomit all his food.. The vomiting attacks were very intense but there were only a few. He would immediately go back to being his playful, happy self and would go eat and/or drink still. He would not vomit right after eating.
Day 2: Oscar was having the same symptoms as the previous day, but add depression right on top of that. He did not want to play or be affectionate.. He would curl up on the floor with his face towards the ground. He would move around some and try and interact with Vera but he was very lethargic. He stopped eating and drinking and then threw up bile. I took him to the vet (Urban Animal in Seattle) and the vet said he thinks he may have swallowed something and suggested an Xray. However he first pumped fluids under the skin, gave him an anti nausea with an anti acid and sent him home. He told me if the vomiting continues by the next day that he wants an Xray.
Day 3: Oscar woke up and seemed to feel much better.. But still a little off. He would have spurts of energy where he played with Vera but they didn't last long and he would fall asleep.. He still seemed depressed and would every once in a while go sit in the hallway with his face to the ground. He started eating again but then did throw up again.. However this time he was only throwing up very small amounts of clear liquid, looked like water or spit. None of the food he was eating got thrown up. He still would have a coughing attack and he would still gag, but did not vomit every time. He did, however, have a large, formed bowl movement which made me think there wasn't a blockage. Oscar vomited once randomly in the middle of the night.
Day 4: Oscar seemed to be about the same as before.. Somewhat feeling better but I could still tell something was off. along with the occasional gagging and coughing he now sounded like he had a stuffed up nose, had squinty eyes and lost his voice! It seemed like a respiratory problem but he had different symptoms than Vera.. No sneezing, runny nose or eyes. So I put him on the clavamox just in case.. Then Vera began to have the same intense cough, but no vomiting that I know of. I found a vomit stain on the floor but I don't know who threw up. Both kittens had bowl movements.
Today: They have not really improved or gotten worse. Both kittens occasionally cough and gag. Oscar still has no meow at first then when he does finally get some noise out it sounds horse. His eyes are also squinty, the left one more squinty than the right. At times he sits on the floor depressed and does not want to be touched, others he is playing with Vera acting normal. No known vomiting today and neither ccat had a bowel movement.
Should I be worried? I have no idea what to do, any advice or insight would be appreciated.. I have been tossing and turning for the last week worried sick about these kittens
