Does anyone else use NO LITTER (LITERALLY) ?

Ok so at first it seemed super strange when my cats came from Russia I was not ok with them not using litter what they use in Russia is a litter pan which is basically like a sifting litter box with the little holes. I didn’t want to use this system but that’s why my cats were used to and so I put them on litter and it was messy of course but they kept on peeing inside the little cubby hole where the litter scooper went so I said I would try the other way NO LITTER and see how it goes and if i didn’t like it after a week I would change back. Well honestly I can say I actually prefer it as litter doesn’t track around the house and the cats don’t get pee on their feet they also are very careful about wire they step I can clean it up and flush it and then I just wash it out with soap and water or some cleaner it actually doesn’t smell as bad as I thought and I can also keep track of the condition of the stool.

What I cannot find and what is bothering me the most is ... is it healthy to have no litter for the humans and the cats does having litter make it less of a change of people getting sick from toxoplasmosis or would it be more because of the litter I’m so confused.

does anyone else use the no litter system?

Toxoplasmosis has nothing to do with litter. Toxo is shed in an actively infected cat's feces, regardless of where they defecate. However, toxoplasmosis oocytes (egg-like structures that are shed in feces) do not become infectious until they have been in the environment for 24 hours, so if you are cleaning up the area where your cats do their business more frequently than that, risk of infection is very low. Use common sense hygiene like not touching the feces directly with your hands and washing your hands after cleaning up stool and you should be fine, whether you use a litter box or not.

Strange because 4 of the breeders I talk to in Russia all use this litter pan method I mean it saves money on litter it’s just a little strange and I got my cats as adults so retraining to use litter has proven difficult haha but they use this system no problem

Oh I don't doubt they use that method. You probably nailed it that they are doing it to save money. It helps keep more junk out of landfills too so that's another plus. I say if it works, go for it.

It’s literally a sifting litter box without the litter the pee goes to the bottom and you scoop the waste into the toilet and spray everything down.

They came to me as adults so had already learned this way from babies at least they dont get all the litter dust even the 99% dust free ones are dusty so thats nice and not cleaning litter off my feet and floor is nice too haha

Oh that WOULD be nice. That’s my one complaint about have a cat, litter all over the floor.

Yup, no matter how much I vacuum there is always more little specs of litter. I think I've just adapted. I keep both litter boxes next to each other in a back corner of my bedroom. When the cats get out, they always go straight to the door and down the hall. I figure 90% of the mess is between the litter boxes and the end of the hall.

I read those articles that say to put litter boxes in the middle of a space and to put litter boxes in different rooms, but to me that's just asking for tracking all over the place. What do I know....but nope, that's not for me.

I say do what works. Those different advices are for cats who have a problem with the status quo. If yours are happy, leave it be.

What an interesting concept! I don’t think I could retrain my girls to no litter at this point but it sounds like it could really have some benefits

My guess is they started with a little litter and then eliminated it. There would be no reason a cat would decide to go in the box like that to do their business especially as a kitten. They naturally like to cover their business. I agree probably a big savings for the breeder in the long run.

I asked her that too but nope that’s how they trained them from the beginning it’s still very odd to me but seems to be working ok

We have always and will forever put ours inside the bathtub and put a kitty door on the bathroom this way 90% of the litter stayed in that bathroom but this only works if you have an extra bathroom like we do.

Funny you mention it - I did this when I had Siamese cats. It helped but they still kicked a lot of litter out of the tub.... sigh.

Now with the nekkids I bought a utility tub for bathing them and I keep that in the second bathroom bathtub, so the litter box had to go. I like this arrangement better because with the utility tub I get to stand up when I'm bathing them; that crouching down was gonna kill me.

OMG they all hate it. One cries (a loud wail) when he figures out I'm taking him to the bathroom. Another one hisses at me. Those are the easy ones. The 3rd one I just think must have been an ultimate fight champion in a prior life.

Their ears I clean separately since they are traumatized enough from the bath. They don't like this either, but it's a lot easier than the bath.

I have to find the video my kids took of them getting bathed my male falls asleep when I cut his nails lol
