Hi All,

i was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to clean sphynx ears.. For me is always a battle and recently it is becoming more and more hard... i do not want o hurt them so i am not pushing them too hard but i am worried of infections at the same time.

Any advise welcome!
Thanks
Chiara

Here's a link that may help from this very lair :)

The one thing I've found is I just do a tiny bit until Pierre is fed up with it and then I leave him. He was a rescue and had never been cleaned, his ears inside where jet black. They are so much better now but still not perfect and we've had him over a month now. He's definitely getting there tho :)

@Kiapi
Whatever you are going to clean the ears with, don't put the cleanser directly into the ears. It makes them drool and or foam at the mouth because everything is connected on a cat! For example: Eye drops put into a cat's eyes will come into the mouth and nose/throat.

I make the task quicker by first cleaning out ear gunk with dry Q-Tips or sometimes even a cotton ball or cotton round. Wipe away as much gunk as you can and then put the cleansing solution on the cotton ball or round (completely wrung out) and clean everything with ease. Otherwise, if you add liquid directly into the ear or begin with the liquid on very dirty ears using the cotton ball/round, you are making a soupy mess and it will take you longer to get the ears clean and your sphynx won't appreciate sitting there any longer than necessary.

You can dip a Q-Tip in the solution as well for the crevices.

@Kiapi , my adoptees hated ear cleaning time ..
I trained them with treats on a towel on my lap while I gently wipe ears with pre wetted flat cotton cosmetic rounds and precision qTips ( good for gentle swirl in that outer edge ear button that hides gunk )
I personally never flush ears or use baby oil or mineral oil

I prepare all my ear cleaning items on the bathroom counter
and their treats ready , open for ez access on the counter

( you can wear a little head lamp to see inside ear better :))

Some, members warm up the ear solution
** I always look for alcohol free as some cleaners sting with certain ingredients **
I actually test on my own skin - some cleaners also have aweful smells to them that cats hate**
What brand of ear cleaner are you using ? Maybe we can chime in to see if perhaps Senstive to it

I put cotton round pads on plate , add multiple qTips and precision qTips on top and wet all with Trizultra I get at vet office or online -

I sit on the toilet lid with kitty on my lap on a towel amd put treats by front feet

I gently raise ear wiping inside with wetted cotton rounds
I gently tilt the head back fingers under chin and thumb between ears to open up ear area for ez access since they try to wince ears back closed .

I rotate back and forth to each ear with different cotton rounds amd qTips
Being firm and fair with praise amd treats afterwards on the floor when I decide we are done :)
Then play :)
