So we adopted a 2 month old Maine Coon kitten from a shelter...he was absolutely beautiful and sweet as can be. He ran around, chasing my son, Abram and loved to be held in his blanket.

We did discover through our short time with him that Abram is allergic to cats. He doesnt have a reaction to our Sphynx girls, but a few days after holding and playing with Margrave Barneby, ( my husband named the kitten this :)) his poor little eyes became red and watery and eventually he couldn't open them at all. So in the end, the little kitten had to be seperate from our son and we were thinking about finding him a new home.

Margrave Barneby did have diarrhea from the moment we brought him home until he left us. He was drinking and eating just fine and we waited to see if this cleared up. By Thursday, the diarrhea hadn't stopped. And even if we did have to find him a new, loving home, we weren't going to send him in a sickly state. My husband took him to the vet Thursday and came home around 12:30 with a good report. He was treated for a parasite given to him by his mommy and everything should clear up and harden up in two days. He was still acting his cute little happy self.

At 6:30pm, Thursday, my three year old, eight year old, my hubby and myself were watching Barneby take his last breath. We had left the house for a quick run to Home depot and had put him in his carrier. I found him, laying in a massive pile of diarrhea and a bloody bum, barely breathing. James rushed to the phone to call the vet's after hours number...but i knew he wouldn't make it.

I stroked his fur and we all whispered sweet nothings to him and he was gone. What broke my heart the most, was Abram asking if we could just take him to get surgery because he was still alive....what he was seeing was the body twitching and he was still meowing, after the breathing stopped.
I asked Abram if he understood what was happening " yes, mommy, our kitten's body died, and his spirit left".

My husband talked to the vet the next morning. Turns out, the assistant may have overdosed him on dewormer.

We only had the little guy for a week and a day. We loved him. I hope we gave him enough warmth and love the short time he was here with us.

Here's a few pics I took in the short time we had him.

Oh I am so sorry. I cannot imagine the sadness surrounded by this. He was just precious. RIP little guy.
We're still shocked. It was so unexpected. My daughter cried and cried and I cried myself to sleep. I still have his little food bowls out.

Oh, my heart breaks for your family and you.
How sad. He was a little doll baby. He was blessed to
have been, part, of your family. As, I know, you all, we're
blessed also.

Thank you everyone, for all the kind words and hugs sent our way. Your words really do mean so much to us. My children think everyone here is so nice :)

We are still a little shocked. I keep thinking he will be running through here any second. I swear I keep hearing his little quirky meow every now and again. I did, finally, wash his little bowls and bed. :(

I heard my husband talking to himself, expressing frustration that he died and anger because it was so senseless. I have to agree...the little guy weighed 1 lb. He had just been dewormed a week ago before he left the shelter. And then to find out the assistant gave him THREE more deworming meds in that one visit. I'm not a genius, but that does seem like a bit much.

The vet did tell my hubby that if we want to find another kitten he would pay for all expenses. He said it's the least he could do and he has children of his own and he knows how hard a death of a pet can be on little ones.

Honestly, even if Abram didn't have allergies, I don't think we'd look for another. I can't bare to lose one again. So we will be at peace with our Phoebe and Raisin. Those two light up our hearts with joy and love.

I know we will see Margrave Barneby again.

Thanks again, everyone, for your kindness-

@bluejay1919, Cristina, such a senseless death of a beautiful little innocent kitten. :(
No doubt you sensed the kitten's meowing. I have sensed some of my pets after they left us to the Rainbow Bridge. Four of my nakeds shared that experience with me last time. They whipped their heads around the same time I did and the five of us just gazed over to "an empty" space!
BIG HUGS to you and your family.

The meowing really does make me stop, in my tracks, and turn around. Then I remind myself he is gone....but maybe he is still here, in spirit. His meow was a very specific meow. It was like a two syllable word with two seperate tones. So cute- I've never heard it from any other kitty around here. :(

Aw, I really like what your garden stone reads. It's so true.

I must say, through this, our Raisin has recently become very close to my son. She is supposed to be his "baby"...but she usually likes to keep to herself. After Barneby passed, she is all about Abram which makes us so happy. She rides with him in the car now and curls up next to him to sleep. She even let's him carry her around the house which didn't happen much before. Abram was all about carrying the kitten around until we found out he was allergic .

It's amazing to me...it's like she knows this little guy loved the baby kitty and now she has finally stepped up to help him feel happy.

Angels are truly spiritually and physically always near us :)
