Feeding issues

Both my cats get fed 3oz of wet food (dick van pattens grain free) in the morning and the evening. I also leave out 1c of dry food. The vet says i'm feeding murdock to much and have to cut back. SO now i feed murdock 2 oz in the am and pm and lleave out 1c of dry food for both cats.

In trying this out he seems so hungry and when i get home the garbage can is knocked over like he's looking for food. Any suggestions?

I always think if someone is being naughty, there is not enough to do while we are gone.

And my cats always think they are starving. Danser could fool you into 6oz of cat food if you fall for her cries.

Do they finish off all the dry during the day? If so it sounds like the right amount of food and they will adjust.

Im not sure about oz because Im Canadian, but I know that feeding a half a cup and a half a can per day is what is reccomended by vets.

If your cat is still hungry and you are feeding this amount, and cant feed more due to weight gain then I would reccomend low calorie food, so then you can feed more! Most brands have a low cal option...

See how that goes, not sure if you are doing it, but do not fill the dry but once a day, even if it's empty.

Dry food actually has more calories in it than wet food.
I would cut back on the dry, not the wet. Plus, the wet is way more yummy to them.

I use Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance wet & dry also. Its a great food, very high quality. You may have to switch to their low calorie formula. I have a dilemma also. I have 1 DSH cat that is very obese, but my other 4 are perfectly fine. So, I can't really feed a low cal formula, & theres no way I can isolate the obese girl to feed her something different. Does the vet feel that both your cats are overweight or just the 1?

murdock weigt 9lbs 6 oz and the vet said i feed him to much. So i cut back on the wet food a bit for him. I feed them in the morning in seperate places so murdock won't steal bandits food like he use to. I leave dry food out and feed them in intervals every 3 hours or else it would be all gone.

Check the fat content of the wet and dry food. I personally would drop the dry food and just feed wet food throughout the day with a programmable feeder while you're gone. The formula to figure out how much to feed is 2 - 3% of their ideal weight to arrive at total oz/day. Let's say Murdock is at his ideal weight of 9.6oz... Then it would be 4.6/oz of food for the day,( 9.6 x 16oz x .03 = 4.608oz)...
I think the dry food is putting him over the edge and it's not really good for them anyway... (only my opinion)... I use the 3% because he's still young and active (I think), you be the judge.

Kitten formula = As much as they can eat... If they don't finish what they have been given, put back in frig and offer it again a couple of hours or hour if they've been playing... Actually the formula works for kittens too. Ask the breeder the weight of the parents and then calculate the formula with either the adult male or females weight depending on which sex you have. Kittens need to be fed throughout the day, that's why I like the programmable feeders when I worked. To keep wet/raw food cold, buy the ones that have packs under them to fill and freeze. Do a search and you'll find a post about them. I love mine and I use it every holiday when I go home to Mass.. The pet sitter likes it too!
