Fluffy at Reading Therapy

Fluffy was asked to one of the local public libraries for children's reading therapy as a therapy animal tonight. It is a program where children read to animals, so they do not feel judged, interrupted, etc. So...we went and were read to tonight. Fluffy was a good therapy animal!

Here are a couple of pictures. One child picked a book and one of the pages had a character that "Sat on a cat", so that is where I covered Fluffy's eyes. We did have permission to take pictures, but for the protection of the kids, I took out their faces.

How awesome! That little girl is really cute even with her face covered. I'm trying to find a program like this for my dogs and hopefully when I get my sphynx the cat will participate too. Unfortunately no luck finding one here yet

Out of curiosity, how did you get into this?

Mine are both registered Therapy Pets here, they go to two programs, mainly Hospice, and then a county nursing home program. So, one of my co-workers, has a sister whose dogs that work in the reading program. One of the dogs became ill this summer and has been unable to do the program on and off. They have two pets go to the program each week, and they knew Fluffy was a therapy cat and called the night before and asked if we were available to fill in for the dog (because we were all set with the therapy requirements). So....I agreed to take her! Normally she recognizes the bed, etc and calms down so it took her looking around the room and sitting in my lap to stop wiggling but she got the idea when the kids started reading!

Moses does great in the Hospice program but is kind of skittish around kids, so we chose Fluffy intead.

I covered her eyes to make the kids laugh and feel relaxed! Looks like it worked!

I would love to do this too! (I think I owe fines at the library though for the kids overdue books! Eek!). I had thought about this with my doggy before she left us (sob) but I had never heard of it with cats.. I guess I just assumed cats are so independent that their mood swings would make it hard to sit still or tolerate small kids. Sophia would be awful at this but Fritz..hes a cuddler... Looks like I have research to do!

I wonder if the School System offers something like this for like preschoolers or Kindergarten to encourage kids to read... My kiddos would love to show off Fritz. Might get them some "cool points".
