Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and unfortunately it is under sad news that brings me here. My baby girl, Fluffy, who just turned 5 in January has been sick since Wednesday night (February 1). The fever has been ranging from a 105.8-103.7 (the 103.7 unfortunately did not hold for long at all).
I adopted Fluffy from an animal shelter where I was volunteering about 2 years ago. I had a male orange tabi cat for 13 years growing up, who lived a very healthy life, and never got sick. Fluffy is my very first time with a sphynx.
I am incredibly worried about her. I brought her in Wednesday night to the vet where they drew blood (WBC count was around 35,000) and everything else looked normal. She was negative for leukemia. They administered antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and a fluid sac. Two days ago they retested her blood, which showed that her WBC had dropped down to around 23,000 (which is still high) and her platelets were high (which is good).
Her fever has held steady since Wednesday night. Since then, she has been to the vet twice a day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and each time has been given antibiotics and a fluid sac. She has also developed a swollen lymph node in her back right leg, that the vet believes to be reactive - not cancerous, but she sent it off to be seen by a pathologist for a second opinion. Her urine culture so far shows no signs of bacteria growth.
I am giving her azithromycin orally once a day and am now administering her fluids at home, which is actually not as scary as I thought it would be. I will be bringing her back to the vet tomorrow morning at 9:30am.
Fluffy has been otherwise a very loving, playful, energetic and healthy cat. Is this type of thing normal for sphynx cats? Do they catch viruses more easily? Has anyone else experienced this before? Anything else you think she should be tested for? Maybe some diseases/viruses that are more prominent in sphynx cats than other cats?
Thank you,
M.
