What is Nepetra Catarina?
A. Technical term for catnapping
B. Catnip
C. Kidney disease in cats
D. None of the above
Nepetra cataria is catnip. It is an herb in the mint family known for its effect on cats, caused by a chemical called nepetalactone in the plant that can send cats into a state of euphoria or hyperactivity in about 50% of felines. Not all cats react to catnip due to genetics and typically kittens under 6 months of age do not react to it. While generally safe, too much exposure to catnip can overstimulate cats, so moderation is important.
