It is very normal to see cats chewing their nails. This is often part of their grooming routine. They usually do this to pull off old, loose nail sheaths and remove debris like litter from their paw pads. They also do this to fix any hangnails so there are no jagged edges to get caught on blankets/carpets. Some senior cats chew their nails more as they are often not as flexible as they were when they were younger, so stretching/using a scratching post might not be as easy for them as it used to be.
There can be times though to be concerned if you see them chewing more than usual as there can be an underlying issue brewing:
Pain/ Discomfort: If your cat focuses heavily on one specific toe, there may be an injury, infection, or an ingrown nail.
Fleas or Dry Skin: Persistent biting at the feet could mean your cat is dealing with itchy skin, dry paw pads, or external parasites.
Stress or Boredom: In some cases, biting can turn into an obsessive behavior tied to anxiety.
