Why Cats Attack Human Ankles

Cats are built to run & hunt, moving feet and ankles can trigger their natural predatory instincts. The two main reasons for them to attack your ankles are:

They are bored: If your cat lacks enough interactive toys or stimulation, they will use your legs as an easy way to grab your attention.

Play Aggression: Indoor cats often have pent-up energy they want to burn off. The movement of your ankles/feet can resemble fast-running prey (like mice or birds), making them a target to hone their hunting skills.

How to Stop Ankle Biting

Avoid Using Hands: NEVER use your hands or feet to wrestle/play with your cat. This includes moving your feet under your sheets when in bed. This accidentally teaches them that human body parts are acceptable toys. This is often the biggest mistake people make and learn the hard way.

Redirect with Toys: When your cat is about to pounce/jump, stop walking and pull out a wand toy to redirect their hunting drive to a new target.

Increase their enrichment: Think about if staggering their meals in puzzle toys or creating "treasure hunts" around your home to keep their brains active. I found putting up bird-feeders that suction cup to the window helps entertain our crew and helps burn off that extra energy especially when they are kittens.
