It has been several years since I shared this fact…Did you ever notice how some animals like dogs, cats and bats have a small pocket on the rim of their ears? It is called Henry's Pocket. All three groups of these animals share acute hearing and ability to move their ears for better pinpointing the location of the source of sounds, or echos like in bats.

The pocket does not seem to serve any purpose when seen on a resting cat’s ears but it changes shape when a cat moves their ear and it widens up into a small cavity with an opening pointing toward their ear canal. The small size of this cavity might explain why dogs and cats hear ultrasound.
They have no idea how this pouch got the name Henry's Pocket, but their hunch is that some cat owner simply named their cat Henry.
