Our kitten soon to be cat is NOT food-obsessed, but she usually stops eating from her bowl and goes to see what the other cats are eating, so we move her bowl so she continues to eat her food next to the other cats’ bowls. Once we do that, she starts eating again. It turns out a cat who isn’t food-obsessed may want to be near the other cats during meals for several reasons:
Social bonding: Cats can have a “group routine,” and eating together can be a social activity even if they aren’t especially hungry.
Curiosity: Your cat may think, “What are they getting that I’m not?”
Security: Some cats feel more comfortable eating or hanging around when their companions are nearby.
Resource monitoring: Cats naturally pay attention to valuable resources. Your cat may want to make sure the other cats aren’t getting something particularly desirable.
Competition without actual hunger: Even a cat that isn’t food-driven may feel compelled to stay nearby because another cat is eating.
Learned routine: If meals happen at a predictable time, your cat may simply associate the other cats gathering with something important happening.
