Cats cannot sharpen their claws:
Many think a cat is sharpening it's claws when they scratch furniture, scratching posts etc, but they cannot actually sharpen their claws. They are simply trying to shed the older outer sheath on their claws. The new nail underneath is already sharp. Often razor sharp as we all know...lol.
Other reasons cats scratch are to exercise, to leave their scent behind and to simply stretch.
