Hello all,
I hope someone can give me some good advice. George who is my 16 month old neutered male has taken to yowling about the house. He doesn't do it at night and i'm pretty sure the reason he does it is because he wants to be a cat that can go outside. He does have a leash and he gets a good amount of time in the back garden when the weather is nice enough for them both to spend time out there, so its not like he doesn't go out at all. He gets interactive play lots, cuddles lots, talking to and attention, food, all practically when he wants it. This has only started happening in the last few weeks. We do have a feliway diffuser in the house for calming measures so i'm not sure what else i can do. I have ordered a pet rucksack with breathable windows so i can start taking him for walks with me. My other cat Luna is no problem at all. Any advice? or is it an age thing thing I may have to wait out?
Thanks in advance.

@fizzypop being that George is neutered, the yowls aren't because he needs to be...so that's one thing to eliminate.

Whenever I've experienced any cat in my life yowling, it was for a number of reasons:
1) needed to get neutered or spayed.
2) wants the litter box cleaned out.
3) wants food.
4) doesn't feel well.
5) old age set in.

Fizzypop, many times when they do this, and you give them attention, they will "take" you or show you what they want. For one furry cat I had years ago, she wanted me to turn the bathroom sink faucet on for her! Her brother used to eat his breakfast and all the other cats' breakfasts in the house so fast. Afterwards, you could hear him yowling from the house if you were in the backyard! Um, stomach ache...eating too much!

The first thing I'd rule out is a health issue. If George is not showing you what he's yowling about, then I'd suggest a vet visit and let the vet give him a good exam and press on his belly, etc.

Hopefully he's very healthy and you could figure out what he wants exactly. Just wanted to make sure he's not doing this for any other reason than he wants to go outside. When he does this, is he looking for you or mostly standing at the door where he goes out to the back?

Great advice thus far, also, even neutered, sometimes other cats in the area can still get them riled up. Are there strays in the area by your home? :)

Hi, I really don't think he has anything medically wrong, he is due his yearly shots in a couple of weeks so will ask them to check anyhow.
He never makes a sound when he's outside. He was out there for two and a half hours this morning. It's very shady our garden so there's no worry of sunburn. He likes to hide in the bushes and stalk the birds. He's always very content in the garden as he is getting his stimulation.
He cried when I bought him back in.
I know there are 3 cats that live over the road from us and from our windows upstairs he can see them sunbathing on their garage roof tops. I do think it's an 'i want outside' issue but he can only go out so much as I have work. He is still so kitten like and full of energy I'm just hoping he calms as he gets older

@fizzypop ok glad to hear he's going to the vet soon anyway for his vaccines, so he can be checked then.

But sounds like it's not a medical issue from your description and he just wants "out" in the back. Do you have a lot of different and interesting fun toys to stimulate him in the house when he can't be outside?

Take a look at my list if you'd like:

I think that's what it is too. He wants outside.
All you can do is let him out, when, you can and play with
him other times.

Thanks for your replies, I'm going to see how things go over the next couple of months, it's summer at the moment and I'm sure he can tell that. He does have loads of toys but there were a couple there that looked good so I'll get a few new ones. He has a tree right in front of the window that looks over the garden and bird feeders but he knows it's not the same as being able to chase them round the garden. new bag for walks with me coming soon.

@fizzypop hopefully when the weather gets too chilly outside, he won't want to be out there.

I have a particular travel bag I use for all my kitties and my two medium/small dogs. I love this bag because he's got a shoulder strap, which also can be a crossbody strap, has a handle for holding it in one hand, has backpack shoulder straps to wear your pet on your back giving you two free hands, has straps to attach to a seat belt in your vehicle to keep it nice and steady while traveling, has wheels and a telescoping handle just like an overnight small piece of luggage and it can be placed on it's back, open some zippers and you've got an instant bed for your pet. There are also a few outside pockets for holding treats, leads, toys, poop bags, etc. Love this style so much. It comes in many different colors and a few different sizes and sold at many different sites:

Oh that looks fab. Do you take your sphynx out in it? How were they if you do? I'm hoping George will like it but I'm a bit apprehensive in case he freaks out. He is fine on his leash though.

I agree about the cold weather, hoping for some rain to put him off a bit. One thing I have noticed actually is that just lately he is trying to mate with Luna (our female spayed sphynx) quite a lot. I wonder if there is a female in heat outside somewhere?! Typical bloody male.

@fizzypop I don't take my sphynx cats outside at all...except to go to the vet. They are absolutely fine in this carrier. They love it as they love to sit in anything, especially if it's new to them or not seen and used often. LOL

My cats do not like the car ride though. They are fine until the car starts to move, then they cry, not freak out. None of my pets has ever freaked out in this carrier and even if they did, they can't get hurt, it's soft. :)

Hmm? George is trying to mate with Luna? Well, there's your answer, his hormones are kicking and that's why he keeps on wanting to go out. Did you get him as a kitten and was he neutered at a young age (like no later than 7 months old or so)?

I got him at 4 months and he was neutered as soon as I got him home (the first week), but he always was randy and tried to mate with everything, he had been neutered for 2 months before we got Luna but it never stopped him trying. He does do it less than before but it has never stopped him completely. He'd make a terrible stud, he never gets it right.
