Getting altered

Hello all,
We have adopted a retired King and Queen. We are trying to schedule their appointment to get them altered. My husband and I are having a slight disagreement. He really doesn't want to risk kittens and wants them to go asap. I want them to go to our vet for a general checkup first. That would mean we have to wait until April 18th to get the surgery. Their mom just took them to the vet a month ago and they were given a clean bill of health but I want to make sure they haven't had an adverse reaction to the stress of being in a new home with two dogs.
Please help a panicked new mom?

The vet will usually check them over before the alter and hold off if there are any concerns. Could you check that with your vet? I don't see why they wouldn't agree to do that just before the procedure as a check up takes only a few minutes.

If you do choose to hold off then I recommend keeping them separate or buying stud pants for your male. Kittens could cause drama with the breeder who rehomed them with you and it's a lot of responsibility.

@DawnSchwartz that's strange to me that you'd have to wait that long for surgery. All vets that I know of will do an exam when you bring them in the day of surgery. Get a copy of the clean bill of health from the King and Queens previous owner and bring that to your vet anyway.

Waiting this long is asking for trouble if you keep them together unprotected.

Thank you all for your advice! We are doing the altering through the ASPCA and I wasn't sure how much pre-surgery checking they would do. But I agree with the concern about kittens. She still has milk from her last litter and I wasn't sure if that would be a problem as well. We will opt for getting the alteration done next week.

@DawnSchwartz does the ASPCA use ISO for anesthesia? You know about Ketamine? Never to be used on a sphynx (can be deadly). Make sure they put them both on a heating pad right after surgery.

I would keep them separated for the best birth control but know thats hard with new to the home amd settling in - I would at least try those stud pants mentioned but not sure realistically hoe quickly that could be ordered before surgery - vet may have a pair to donate?

*** make sure you ask before the surgery date and confirm ** NO Ketamime anesthesia - very bad / can be lethal in sphynx ( genes, rebound affect on heart)

Also ask if they give heating pads in recovery and pain meds to take home -
Ask lots of questions -

I always ask for gas inhalant anesthesia "ISO" Isoflurane -
I actually switched vets to go to one that uses ISO

I already had a call in asking about the type of anesthesia (thanks to all the in formation on this amaxing forum!). I will find out the answer before scheduling anything!
