Hi everyone,
I haven't posted in a while, as our beloved Umami (almost 2 years old) has enjoyed good health for the past 9 months. She came from an awful breeder and had chronic health problems for about a year, which ultimately ended after long term doxycycline to treat suspected mycoplasma (a lot of cats from her cattery have that - some survived and some died).
Now our baby girl is ill. Very ill. On December 25th, she refused to get out of bed and needed a lot of coaxing to eat and move. We let her rest for the day, and morning of 26th she finally passed some faeces and perked up. That day she declined very quickly, so we took her to the vet hospital where she was given fluids and then released to us that evening.
On 27th we took her to her normal vet and they xrayed her, which showed tiny stones in her colon and a large amount of faeces. Its not uncommon for her to eat weird things and she's always passed them out herself. They gave more fluids and a suppository which helped her pass everything. Control xrays showed her as clear.
She came home and briefly perked up before declining once again. We took her back to the hospital on the 30th where she stay 24 hours until the 31st - this time she was yet again blocked up with poo, but no stones. She was sedated and given a warm water enema.
Again, she perked up when she got home but she declined once again within a few hours.
She went back to the vet yesterday and they began running tests, while keeping her on a drip and giving pain meds.
Pancreas
Thyroid
Kidneys
Blood panel
Heart
Lungs
Barium test for a further blockage
All negative.
A urine sample showed white blood cells and an ultrasound showed sediment in the bladder so we're now treating her for a suspected UTI.
The only results we are waiting on are for FIV and FeLv.
She spent the night with us and we're administering a pain relief, lactulose to help her defacate (which she did at 3am) and we're syringing fluids around the clock. However she is getting worse in terms of her behaviour and it's getting harder to syringe water into her. She refuses to swallow and lets the water drop out, even with her head tilted back and me taking it very slow.
She's going back to the vet at 4pm today to receive an injection of antibiotics and to assess her condition.
So after all that, we're extremely lost. 3 different vets are baffled as to what is wrong with her. I am extremely concious of the fact that her welfare is rapidly declining. The more we do to her, the more withdrawn and apathetic she gets.
Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have any further things we can consider? We are absolutely terrified we are going to lose our baby girl and I can't think of anything worse than having to make that decision with no real answers as to why.
Of course we're dedicated to nursing her through and seeing what other options are there for her, but we're at a stage where we can't not think of the worst possible outcome.
