I am heartsick and heartbroken. My little 9 year old sphynx Luna died unexpectedly yesterday. I am at a loss of how to handle her death. She was unlike any other cat I have ever had, a true friend and companion. I noticed last week she looked a little thinner and was breathing a little hard, I thought due to the summer heat. By the weekend I was beginning to wonder if her harder than normal breathing was a concern.Otherwise she was fine and chipper, and eating normally. She was due for vaccines and check up, so I made an appointment and took her in yesterday. I told them she seemed to be breathing a little hard in the past couple of weeks. The vet took a listen and said her lungs sounded clear but her heart was a severe concern. Her heartbeat, which should have been around 150 per min., was over 400. After a quick round of xrays and bloodwork the doc called me back to see the xrays. Her chest cavity was full of fluid and there was a clearly visible tumor in the region of her heart. The vet said her prognosis was poor, and the immediate concern was to get rid of the fluid so she could breathe more easily. However, it was already past closing time so he asked me to bring her back in the morning so they would have all day to drain the fluid and monitor her. He said she would be ok overnight, and I could take her home. She seemed pretty lethargic afterwards, I assumed from the stress of the vet trip. She curled up in my lap for an hour or so and slept. After that she got up for a bit, then was in pretty clear distress and having a very hard time breathing, crying a few times, crawled into my lap and back out underneath a table. I was in a panic myself by this time and got her out to head to the emergency vet clinic. By the time I walked from the house to my car with her she was gone.
