We picked up our first sphynx kitten, Scarlett NoHaira, a couple of days before Christmas in 2009. We were so excited, and Scarlett was the perfect little girl. She was super-smart and had a wonderful personality. She added so much to our lives and made us so happy, especially me. Our kids were teenagers and didn't need Mom as much anymore, so I was thrilled to have a kitty to take care of. Things were great for the first three months. Then Scarlett developed food allergies. She got a terrible skin rash and was having digestive problems. After months of trying different things, we found a food that she could eat and things seemed better. We adopted Scarlett's mother and grandmother, and were thrilled with our 3 generation kitty family. Then Scarlett developed asthma, but we got this under control too. Scarlett was nearly asthma-attack free for a year. Then this October, she started having terrible asthma attacks. I didn't want to give her steroids if I could help it, so we tried acupuncture. Scarlett responded well at first, but then one night had 15 attacks in 7 hours, so we were forced to give her steroids to calm the attacks. The medicine that had worked in the past and her inhaler didn't seem to help her, so we tried a stronger drug. She started having trouble breathing a few days later, so I took her to the emergency vet hospital on Dec. 22, 2011, exactly two years after we'd first picked her up from our breeder. When the vets took x-rays, they found that Scarlett's stomach was 3 times its normal size and full of undigested food. Her heart, liver and bladder were enlarged, and her intestines were full of waste. Her lungs were damaged and had fluid in them. The vets did everything they could for her, but her problems were too many and too severe. We had to put Scarlett to sleep in the early hours of Christmas morning.

This was the most horrible decision that we ever had to make. The vets did a necropsy on her and though they couldn't find a reason f0r her problems, it was obvious from their report that there was no way to help Scarlett. My heart is broken and I miss her so much! I love our other two kitties, but Scarlett was my baby. I loved her like she was my own child. I can't believe that a cat with such a beautiful spirit was given such a defective body. Even though our time together was too short, I am so grateful that she was my kitty for her brief stay on Earth.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your baby. I am also sorry that you both had to go through all the scary asthma attacks. I know it would be nice to have a reason for all her health problems but I'm glad she is not suffering anymore. You loved her enough to know when to let her go. My thoughts are with you, I know how hard this is.

RIP Scarlett.

Hugs to you and your family.

I am sure that this was very difficult decision with no other options for Scarlet. If she had all of these health issues she must experienced non-stop pain and suffered, which affected her quality of life. And your quality of life as caregiver, seeing her suffer... I feel your pain. Be strong.

I am so sorry that you lost your sweet little Scarlett. I know the loss of a loved one leaves an enormous hole in your heart that nothing seems to help. Poor little thing--you gave her the best life you could--you obviously cared for her as much as anyone could have--above and beyond what many people would have done--and then when you had exhausted every other reasonable alternative, you gave her the only gift you had left--a release from her suffering. Scarlett was a special girl--she brought you joy and added so much to your life. How lucky she was to have such an important job to do in her short little lifetime. I am sure that somewhere across the Rainbow Bridge, Scarlett is playing with the others we've loved and lost--running free and breathing with ease. She is most likely telling the angels what an incredible family she had and how much they loved her. She isn't restricted by lungs that don't work well, or the rest of that little body that failed her--and I am sure that all her pain is replaced with the warm glow of having been loved so very much. Scarlett, you sweet little girl--you have earned your rest. You were loved....and that is everything.

So very sorry,
Susi

I am so sorry for your loss. It isn't fair to lose one so young and I understand your pain. But try to take comfort in knowing you gave her the best care possible - including letting her go - and she is now running and playing pain free and you will see her again at the Bridge.

::HUGS::

I too am so sorry for your loss. When you said she was like your child, I know exactly
how you feel. My Izmae is my child also. I can't imagine what you are going through
but, I know it can't be easy. It's something only Jesus and time can heal.
What a sad Christmas for you, I will pray for you. Best Wishes.
