It turns out my baby that died in September didn't have heart disease, it was FIP. Shortly after she passed, her mate started showing signs. This time I knew it was coming, so Ted and I spent a lot of quality time together, and when he could no longer crunch his food I began spoon feeding him turkey and beef baby food. He didn't do the the typical cat thing, where he knew he was sick and wanted to be left alone... OH no. He would struggle onto my lap anytime I stood still long enough. The vet said I should wait until he was obviously suffering to put him to sleep, and I agreed. But he was so attached to me and so strong that he never showed his discomfort. I waited and waited, trying to prepare myself, and he never once showed signs of giving up. Then, tonight, we were cuddling on the couch and he was purring. I moved him and noticed he was bleeding from his rectum. He was so skinny... I had been watching him go from a plump gray pear to skin stretched over bone, but he still fought and walked and meowed and ate when I fed him.
But it was time. He was so frail... I called my vet and she came in from home and helped with the euthanasia. I held him, like I was unable to do for my girl Cactus. And now my home is empty.
I don't even know how I can begin to get through this. Those cats weren't pets... They were the reason I kept a house and a job at the roughest times in my life. They came to me by sheer luck, when I wasn't even looking for them, and saved me. And now they're both gone.
For such a rare disease, it seems quite unlucky that both of my babies would get it and pass in front of my eyes.
He always wanted to be right next to me, on my lap if he could manage it... So I'm going to have a life gem made, and keep him next to me forever.
I've never had to put anyone down before, I feel evil. But he was so tired.

those kitties had a great life with you and as much as they helped you do the things you wanted to do, you helped them feel loved and cared for. You gave them good lives. RIP Tedders. I think it's great that you're getting a gem made to honor his memory. I hope this helps you with your healing process. Huge huge hugs to you!!
