All,

I am asking for some help for my hairless cat Rico. We believe that he is a Donskoy. We rescued him knowing that he needed help, but he is now battling a full blown bacteria infection. How did this happen?? Nobody knows!!! The vet said nomally you would see trama. He was acting fine, then bam he couldn't breath and had fluid surrounding his lungs. If you have any thoughts on how he could have gotten sick please let me know. I would like to prevent this from happening again. Thank you so much!

We had something similar with our little guy, has your vet did a respiratory PCR panel? In our case Gus was positive for Calicivirus which probably kicked off the URI/pneumonia.

If you just rescued him and have other cats it could have been the introduction to your other pets, one may have been a carrier of a common virus like herpes or calicivirus, and the stress of moving home made your new guy extra susceptible.

We had quite an involved course of steroids, inhaler and antivirals over many months for Gus to make a full recovery. Your vet will advise I'm sure and hopefully it will clear up soon.

We have had him since March and do not have any other cats. The vet said that this is on the outside of his lungs. If it was anything respiratory they said it would be in his lungs. They pulled fluid from his lungs and it was full of bacteria. They first suspected FIP, but since they found bacteria they are saying that FIP is probably not the case (thank goodness). They have my kitty on 2 antibiotics 2 times a day and it seems to be working. Had to do several taps to get fluid away from the lungs so he could breath. He was on oxygen for 3 days straight. Doing okay now. But they say he has a long road to full recovery.

Sorry to hear your baby has had a rough time. He is so handsome. My first thought was pneumonia as well. Did vet also do a heart scan by chance? Happy healing vibes are sent. Please keep us updated your info will no doubt help a member in the future.

Rescuing a baby is priceless, but often the not knowing what their past was like can be frustrating. Your baby has a good clean start with you in their forever home and I hope all of the pieces start to fall in to place.

Thank you. The doc said she listened to the heart and it sounded normal. We didnt do an ultrasound though just to try and save money. This week has cost me thousands of dollars. She also said that she didn't think that it was heart related since they found bacteria.... it's just crazy!!!
