Holy Batman!

So last night..I heard this funny noice in my den, where Fluffy was clawing at the curtain. She kept doing it, and every time she clawed at the curtain, it squeaked and sounded like a "boing!" noise, like a spring behind it! Moses has been catching tiny mice in my attic, and they had been outside earlier, so I figured it was going to be a mouse or a chipmunk, corned behind the curtain. I walked over there, pulled the curtain around and was face to face with a BAT!

I screamed and immediately grabbed Fluffy awhiled trying to duck and cover. Fluffy got out of my arms and went back over there, so I was trying to grab her as the thing took off flying around the house. So I finally got her and ushered her and Moses to the bedroom and locked them in there. The BAT went back to the curtain after flying around for a few minutes, while I stayed in the second bedroom calling around to see who could take care of it. This was my conversation with the police:

"Police department can I help you?"
"Yeah, I need Animal Control - there is a bat flying around my house"
"I'm sorry, if you are within city limits, Animal control only comes to catch loose dogs"
"Ok, please send Animal Control, I have a teeny tiny loose dog with wings flying around my house".

So, they were no help. I finally found an actual "bat service" that had an "emergency removal" service that comes to your house and catches loose bats. So he came within 30 minutes and caught my bat. Once I let Fluffy out of the bedroom, she went back to the curtain, wondering where her squeaky toy went! He said that bats in this area are not usually rabid, and as long as they have had their rabies shots (required in the county), that unless she was actually bit by it or had caught it in her mouth she didn't have to go to the vet and get treated. He said it was a kind of bat that is pretty safe. Whew!!!

Wow! That must have been fun! We had a bat in the house many years ago when we lived in California. Like you we also found out that animal control wouldn't help. I love your description of the tiny dog with wings. I hope Fluffy got lots of praise for being such a mighty hunter!

Glad they didn't kill the bat---they didn't, did they? Bats are wonderful creatures--without them we would be totally over run with mosquitos. I have put up a bat house to try to get them to roost here. Not inside my house, though.

Wow. I might have freaked out just a little if that had happened to me. Not because of rabies, I just don't like the idea of a bat in my house.

Love your phone conversation! We've had bats, squirrels, and birds come down our chimney. Cats go nuts at the glass cover when one shows up.

Glad they didn't kill the bat---they didn't, did they? Bats are wonderful creatures--without them we would be totally over run with mosquitos. I have put up a bat house to try to get them to roost here. Not inside my house, though.

The bat catcher took it away in a gatorade bottle to let it out in a "natural habitat", hopefully away from my house!

I would say the body was like 6 inches longand the wing span was probably about 10 inches! that seems BIG to me!

That IS a big bat--the ones we have around here usually are microbats--bodies are only a couple of inches long.

I would have thought that were a moth, and grabbed the fly swatter, haha. This thing was HUGE, and SQUEAKING at me!!! And then flying at my head!Oh, and its face was SO ungly, squished in and its upturned nose....uggg I came home from work today and swatted the curtains with a broom to make sure there were none hiding in there!

He's just trying to fool the next bat into thinking he wants to play! Seriously,I hope you can put this behind you soon. It must feel like your house has been invaded. Hopefully this will turn out to be a one-time thing. Don't let this get to you!

I think you handled that rather well bats freak me out because I yell when I see them and then they just fly towards the sound coming out of your mouth. lol thanks for sharing.

When you think of bats, rabies always comes to mind. Glad the situation was taken care of & your cats & family are safe.

We went camping over the weekend. Night #1 we had a raccoon visit us, & night # 2 a skunk showed up after dinner. My friend, Roger totally freaked as I was trying to get closer to the skunk to have a better look with my flashlight. He tossed a frisbee and scared the poor thing into the brush. He didn't hit the skunk with it, but I was still upset with him. During the day, there were lil' chipmunks around. They're really cute.

I used to think bats were awesome too, all fragile and graceful, until I pulled my curtain back and it squeaked and HISSED at me!


I have lived here 2 years this summer and have never had a problem! This year, Moses is bringing me mice left and right, and Fluffy finds a bat! What really freaked me out was that I had been in that particular room napping all day/evening. I didn't see it fly into the room, and had only left really to go take a shower about 10 minutes before...so unless it came into the room in that 10 minutes, it was sleeping next to me all day! I did remember however, that a couple of weeks ago, my neighbor had mowed my lawn for me, and accidentally knocked the filter off of my vent for my hot water heater...and handed it to me, and I never replaced it, and the person who installed it had specifically said "Remember to keep these on, so little critters so get in" So once I remebered that I ran right out there and replaced it! Perhaps it was from that.

My mom has since bought me a net so I dont have to spend money on a bat catcher in case it happens again...little did she know I was gonna send her up to my attic to check with the net to check for loose dogs with wings! Nothing up there! Except my cat, who tried to crawl down the vent, haha. Ahh, such is life!
