Hey ya'll I'm in CT & this nasty storm Sandy is on its way next week. Our power companies out here have a terrible track record of being really sucky when power goes out! Last year during Irene we lost power for almost a week & the freak snow storm in Oct we lost power for 8 days... No power=No heat... I'm very worried about this... My question is for you guys, how low can temperature go down in the house before I really have to worry about it affecting Starla? I mean I will totally go sit in my car if we have to! I kinda plan to turn up the heat as high as I can stand it & then if it goes off at least it will take a bit more time before we start to feel it... Ugh... I'm so freakin nervous. This stuff has my stomach in knots for real.

We are supposed to get it also, What is the temp where you are? We don't have our heat on yet here so I am not worried about the cold just the amount of water we will get.
Starla should be able to keep warm with blankets and snuggling you. Get some extra out just in case.

Do you have a bug out kit for you and Starla just incase with everything you need for a few days. I hope all it is is power if anything.

I am with you about the storm being here in the Hudson Valley in NY. We were without power last year as well. It was much colder last year with that storm than what they are predicting this time (I hope) The nakeds did fine with it. We had LOTS of blankets up all over the place for them, but they sensed our concerns and they enjoyed being on our laps under blankets :) I remember vividly sitting in sweats with a robe and a coat on and my boy wrapped up under my robe while leeloo was with hubby doing the same thing. If Starla does not sleep under the covers now, she will learn fast :) My boy is the one who keeps me warm...my little football I hug every night. Starla will do better than you will...I don't know how many times I tried to turn on the lights ...duh...no power equals no lights, but I still did it over and over.

You could always get some kind of little battery operated heater. Just something small for warming her bed. Do they make electric blankets that run on batteries? An electric blanket would keep both of you warm.

I am in southeastern Ma. All of our local meteorologists are in agreement that this storm is going to be so huge.. even if Sandy comes in somewhere in Jersey, we will still have somewhat of a severe impact here. This storm is highly unusual for late October. They are calling it a hybrid storm, because it will hook up with an arctic front coming in from the plains. It is being compared to 1991's The Perfect Storm, which never made landfall. To top it off, they are predicting it to be a slow mover once it is over land.

My advice is, I would have your cat's crate(s) ready. If they're stored away somewhere.. get them out now. Prepare the crate with a blanket & pack some essential needs for your baby in case of evacuation.

Call me a weirdo but, my daughter & I decided back in April to start preparing for an emergency situation for our family. We each have our own B.O.B (bug out bag) filled with essential supplies/food. I ordered a survival backpack for my babies & a cat first aid kit, which just arrived this week (how ironic). Another good idea is to buy a self-heating pet mat. These have a special lining inside that radiates your pet's body heat right back to them.

You should also take some plastic containers filled with water & keep them in your freezer. Should the power go out, the extra ice will keep things frozen longer. Also, adjust your refrigerator to the coldest setting. Food will stay colder longer as well.
And of course, flashlights, batteries, bottled water.. yada yada. If anyone cooks with gas, you can buy hot water bottles. Chances are you won't lose gas service, so you can boil water to fill the bottles & put under blankets to keep your babies warm that way.

Good luck to all my Sphynxlair friends on the east coast. Be prepared and please stay safe.

I see some battery operated heaters online & blankets online... The trick is FINDING them in the stores... At this point, you can't even find water in the stores... :(

She does sleep under the blankets! LOL.. I'm just worried about having to go to work & leaving her home if power is out for a while... I also have a lizard that I am terribly worried about! I might board her tomorrow just as a precaution.

Temp isn't bad now... I always keep thermostat on 65 but I hear this is supposed to mix with an arctic storm & cause snow, thats what I'm worried about...

Don't feel stupid...as long as you have a gas stove and a match you are fine. That is a plus :) The starter function will not work on the gas stove, so turn on the gas and use a match/lighter. We just picked up extra water, ice, soup, batteries and yes kitty food! We had a brand new Pet Smart Open and Babas went in his pouch with us (it hooks on the front of me) and he was the talk of the store. Everyone loved him and just wanted to touch him. He was such a good, no make that GOOD boy. Lots of extras went in the cart for our spoiled boy. The feather toy will be his favorite...lol.

I am assuming you have fleece blankets. Your baby will be fine snuggled in. Get a hot water bottle if concerned. Having a gas stove will allow you to warm up water etc which will help. Not sure what you do for a living, but if your work place doesn't lose power, is there any way to take it with you? If not hot water bottle will help as well.

I'm in MA and getting prepared, too. I was SO lucky last year, I didn't lose power with either Irene or the Oct. snow storm. A lot of my town did. I was in PetSmart today and forgot to look for one of those beds that reflect heat back but I need to go to the other store later that has her favorite good (was waiting for the traffic to subside - seems everyone is out shopping today) and will see if they have one.

I don't know a lot about lizards, but I think I'd be more worried about him/her.

I am lucky in that I don't have a job to go to, but I'd stay home if you can. Or is there someone you can have your baby stay with while you are at work if you have no heat? Or as Catzzmeow says taking Starla with you to work or leaving a hot water bottle with her.

I have some sterno I bought last year and a little mini fold up stove that holds a can. I know you're not supposed to use it inside, but I could use it on my closed in porch if need be, and open windows out there if it's not raining. It won't boil water, but will make it hot.

I have a cat to pet sit starting Monday and I got the person's permission to bring her to my house if it look s like it's really going to be bad here. I would hate for the poor cat to be alone in her house with the wind howling outside.

Let's hope it won't be as bad as they are saying!!!

Last year we lost Power for eight days but i was in a different town, this is a new place for me I've only been here a month... I work in tech support, wouldn't be able to bring her. Was looking for a hot water bottle where can i find one?

Oh & where did you get pouch? I need to visit Petsmart.

The lizard will be ok for a temp drop, her heat goes off at night anyway. There's a reptile store a few Towns away that boards, she went last year with that snowstorm in Oct so I'm not too worried about her... I'm glad my stove will work, that's exciting! Really hoping its not bad... Praying for all of us!

Hi You can use plastic water bottles for hot water bottles. just make sure the cap is on tight and wrap any hot water bottles in a towel the put it in with your baby. Just do not put bioling water in any hot water bottle because they can burn your baby that is why i say wrap it in a towel.

Looking like it won't be as bad as they were saying, but could still lose power. Hope we all keep our electricity and have dry basements!

I bought the Daba Doob companion pouches at Pets Plus but you can get sales on line. They are great as there are no leg holes. We can walk around the neighborhood, go to vet and pet store and Babas just sits and looks around. Leeloo was also great in hers. There is a clip to attach to a collar if you want, but both of ours were just so good they just loved to look around. They come in several sizes. We started them both as kittens so they knew nothing different. Also great you can pet and assure them all the time.

Sarah, hope you are doing OK in the storm.

So far so good here in MA. Still have power, trees around me still standing. Bea has slept under a blanket most of the day, she has no idea anything is going on.

I'm not near the coast, things are pretty bad there.

Hoping everyone in the path stays safe
