I think it was HCM

Hi, I'm new here. I am (was) the mommy of 2 beautiful sphynx kitties. Luxor, born June of 2005 and Bucky, born in March of 2006. I honestly had never heard about this disease, knew nothing about it.
I noticed that my Luxor seemed a little ill on Feb 24. She just wasn't acting quite right. It was late at night, and instead of snuggling under her blankie, she had climbed on the arm of the chair. She was laying down and her body was very flat and didn't look right. Plus, she had this vacant look in her eyes. She was taking water though, so we thought we would tuck her in for the night and check on her in am. When we woke up, she had pottied in her bed, had climbed up as high as possible on her chair, and was howling and disoriented. We immediately knew it was bad, whatever it was so we rushed her to vet less than 5 minutes away. When I opened her carrier at vet, she was gone. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!! Vet told me that it had to be a heart attack. I was in shock. She was healthy I thought. I came home and started to read about cat heart attacks and discovered HCM. I've been on the internet reading about it ever since. What a horrible disease to steal my baby's life so soon.

I am so sorry for your loss.Many here have lost their babies to this horrid disease. I lost my sweet Dude 2 weeks ago and just now am starting to participate in life. I am so sorry for how traumitizing this was for you. All I can say is our lives have been made better by our babies no matter how long or short our time with them is. I wish I could give you a big hug right now. Prayers of comfort are on their way to you and your family. Everyone on this site understands the depth of your feelings for your babies. You will never be blown off here with a "its just a pet" attitude. Bless you and know we all mourn for you...Marna

I am so sorry for your loss. I truly can't imagine what it would feel like. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Feb 25th isn't that long ago and I am sure the hurt is still fresh. Hopefully Bucky continues to be strong and healthy. I'm glad you found somewhere where people can understand the love of a sphynx. It's something I never knew exist until recently myself.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss!!! It could have been sudden cardiac arrest or your kitty could have thrown a clot. I lost my Nubis back in October to throwing a clot (he had HCM). I know the horrible pain you are feeling. My heart goes out to you... may you take comfort in all the wonderful memories you and Luxor have together. And they never truly leave us... bless your little angel Luxor.

I'm soooo sorry for your loss, dear. I don't understand it. I visited dozens of breeder sites, & they all said that they tested their Sires/Dams for HCM. I admit I'm a bit nervous, because the breeder I got my Sphynx from told me that her vet doesn't test for HCM any longer but that none of her cats in her cattery ever had it at all. If so many breeders test for this disease, why are so many kitties dying from it? It is so sad. I honestly do feel for you, & I send you blessings. Time will ease the hurt.

Does anyone here know (ballpark figure) of when this disease usually shows up? My vet told me it was too early to test my Boone for it. He was 8 1/2 months old @ the time, & now he is 9 1/2 months.

Well, Luxor was seemingly healthy, but I never had her scanned because I had never heard about it when I got her. She would have been 6 this year and showed no symptoms at all until the night before she passed.

Even if you scan negative it can pop up at a later date. The advantage to scanning is it can be managed and caught in it's early stage.
