Hi. My cat that weighs approximately 8 1/2 pounds, ingested three 200mg Advil/ibuprofen capsules this morning about 0930am. I took her to the closest capable vet and ultimately she started getting treatment about 1130am. After induced vomiting, there was no signs of any pills. She is currently in their care. I’m quite anxious and I realize it won’t be until the 12 hour mark until she shows signs of toxicity. She has baseline bloodwork done & that shows everything is currently fine (no out of bounds markers& no current health issues). I left the pills on the countertop, so… 1am can’t come soon enough. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Please be kind

Update: it’s now 7am & she is still ok. They induced vomiting (after waiting 2hrs!!!), which produced nothing (by then), then fed her wet food with charcoal. They did blood checks @midnight, 3am-ish & 6am. Her blood numbers have been good, with no large spikes or drops in the markers for kidney & liver functions. She pooped a while ago & it was black from the charcoal but it was “not like tar” (which would indicate blood in the stool), so that’s good news. It shows the charcoal has made its way through the digestive tract & this gives it the best chance of absorbing the ibuprofen. They’re keeping her to monitor her blood, but if she stays really stable, I may get to pick her up after 1pm.

Update 2 : she is home!!! I have to give her an antacid & another pill & also she’ll get follow-up blood tests Wednesday & (probably) Thursday. Only 1 vet finally explained how precarious the days after ingestion are for both her kidneys & liver, so I’m making the daily drive to town to ensure things are still ok. Thanks for the support

Update 3 - forgot to post #2, so joined them here) getting third blood draw today (Th). No other complications as of yesterday (Wed).

Update 4: All seems well!! She has been a little tired after such a busy week, but seems normal otherwise (food/water in/out). The last blood results looked good, but the vet would like one more in about a week, then again in a month. They said that the ibuprofen could cause long term kidney issues that may be masked by the veterinary care, so they want to be sure that her levels continue return to her previous “normal”.

Thank you for the update. Glad to read all is still well. And a good thing your vet is so careful.

I was thinking about what happened to me once: I left paracetamol (painkillers) on my desk. Later I noticed they weer gone. I totally freaked being afraid my boys are them. I called the vet and she said to first search the house carefully. She couldn't imagine one of the cats ate the painkillers cause they taste awful. I searched the house and indeed: I found the painkillers, the cats probably played with them but luckily didn't eat them.
