Injection site reaction???

Hi everyone! Gosh, I feel so bad coming on and asking for advice when I have been so absent lately. Please know that I check in and while I can't respond, I do celebrate, worry, and laugh with you.

I took Max to the vet for a slight URI on Friday as he had started sneezing and I noticed a little discharge from his left nostril.

In addition to Clavamox liquid, the vet gave him two shots, an antibiotic (Timentin) and an antihistamine. I'm not sure what order he got them in, but I know when the vet gave him the second one, he said it would pinch for a minute and then feel better.

When we got home, I noticed a bruise forming on his left hip. I figured it was just a normal reaction to the shot that you just couldn't see in cats with hair. The bruise got very red and he licked at it for a few minutes and then seemed to forget about it.

Today, it doesn't seem to be gicing him any pain, but it looks weird, kind of sunken in and green in the center. I would tend to think that it is just going through the normal color changes of a bruise, but something looks funny about the skin itself.

I am going to call the vet's office as soon as they open, but I know that my vet is not working today.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar from non-vaccine shots?

I will post pics in another post since I have to do it from my phone.

I am of no help I know with us humans we can bruise with injections I have had a bruise the size of a basket ball from a tiny prick so in sure it can happen with animals perhaps his just having a slight reaction to it?

Elvy bruised a bit from her rabies vaccine, but not as big as Max's. The green in the center is what has my mommy radar beeping. As far as I know, it should not be green!

It looks like there is some puss under the skin. I would take your baby to the vet for some topical ointment. Bella got a red mark but that was it.....It looks like it's getting infected!! Good Luck and let us know.

I too think the green part is weird. I know I personally bruise easily and when I get a bad bruise it goes through the colors of the rainbow, but a small amount of bruising is normal from a shot, sounds like it might be an infection.

I took Lucy in a while back to get her shots and she was so sore after her shots she would not let us pick her up or touch her and even hissed at us. It took about 3 days. But she did not bruise. Hang in there.

Green is usually a sign of infection. I think you should take baby back to the vet for some antibiotic ointment. I use this stuff called malacetic otic for cleaning my cats' ears, but it also doubles as a sterile cleaning solution for wounds. I think its always wise to have a bottle of this stuff around. You can find it either on amazon or ebay. Keep us posted.

Please don't feel bad for asking for advice (that's what this site is all about). It doesn't matter whether you come on and post 12 times a day or just once in a great while.

When I first read the part about the site being "green"...I got alarmed. Then I thought about it for a moment and realized that as a human's bruise is going away, it turns yellowish, which in turn can appear green mixed with skin colors.
Then I read further and you said that the skin didn't look right and there was some sort of dip in that area.
Even if your vet isn't in today, I'd call and get your baby over there. If something is going on way under the skin (like an infection from the injection site), an antibiotic ointment won't help. He'll need either a much better antibiotic in injection form or maybe even it drained if it's a pussy mess.
I don't mean to scare you, it's just that it's difficult to tell from the photos what's really going on and it's better to be safe and take your baby to the vet if you are concerned than rather wait and see what happens. If it's a bad infection at the site of injection, you wouldn't want him to develop a fever. It could simply be a bruise going away. Hopefully it's no more than that.

Sorry for the late catch up.

I ended up speaking with a different vet in the practice who asked me a few questions and said that he wasn't too concerned, but to keep eye on him and bring him in the next day if it got worse.

By the next day, it looked as if the bruise had actually been a blood blister that was coming to the surface (I know it wasn't, but that is the best way for me to describe it... a scab from the inside).

This scab has slowly gotten smaller and the sunken in area has raised back up. I don't think it will leave an indented scar, but am curious to see his skin pigment after it comes off.



My friend, who is a nurse, says she has seen something similar happen in humans when IM injections are given too straight in and some of the medication leaks back up the puncture track and the reacts with the skin from underneath.

Yes I can see the pic. Glad it does not seem like am infection.
