Introduction to raw diet...

It has been a day and half now since I started Jude on his RAW diet and everything is fantastic!! I quit him cold turkey on dry food and canned, I was kind of worried about doing that, but I apparently need not be. His poo DOES NOT STINK- I didnt even know he had gone, the only reason I knew he had is because I clean out his box every morning- he doesn't have a dirty butt, no poopy paws, his poo is different and smaller, NO GAS so far, and he gets so excited about his food! Also, its really odd, he has always been a big cuddler and lover, but like that is all he has wanted to do last night and today and he walks around chit chatting with me and my other cat all the time, its so cute and funny!! I just can't believe there was this big of a difference in 24 hours!! I am blown away...

Same thing w/Dr. Spock 4.5 yrs ago! Tons of energy, bright eyes, and no stinky poop! All in 24 hours! Gremlins eat raw also,,,,,

Yay! I am so happy for you! This is why I love RAW, Khaleesi is 12 weeks and just started last week, but I have 7 other cats. People come into my home and always ask where my litter is, because they don't smell at all. They are so shocked. Less poop, my cats never stink at all. The have amazing teeth, eyes, a breath. And honestly their temperament is so different! So cuddly, so talkative, so playful. I have had cats my whole life. But these cats on RAW are so different. And another thing is, NO VET BILLS! I have only paid for altering, otherwise my cats have been so healthy (and my dog)

any1 using a pre packaged raw diet.. im getting my baby next month.. i want to feed him raw but work long odd hours and im worried about prep time.. and i dnt have the extra cash for the grinder n stuff for my own prep right now anyways.. thnx all. have a great day!!

We do not use raw but I know Susi our moderator and others use raw, hopefully they will chime in and help you.

I use NV and RadCat.. I don't have the time to prep everything either! All I do with this is portion out the amount I want to feed and put it in the fridge to thaw out, easy peasy!
You might want to pm Khalessi, she is one of the raw experts and I am sure others on the forum will chime in!

I didn't want to have to buy a grinder and make sure I got the right amount of bone/organ/meat. I first started on NV and Spockie loved it but then is digestive system said NO and threw it up! To make a long story short, I found a supplier on the carnivorefeed-supplier yahoo group data base that would deliver frozen whole/ground raw.. They have been a godsend and I love their products. I now feed ground course rabbit, chicken, pork, hunks of chicken gizzards/necks/hearts and add Taurine. I just break down the 2lb containers into bags for the day and defrost.. Super easy and a whole heck of lot cheaper than NV! ! !

I was lucky enough to find a butcher in my area that was willing to grind whole dark chicken for me (for about $1/lb too!). I make a batch every two weeks or so by mixing the ground meat, liver, and vitamin supplements then portion it out into daily amounts and freezing them. It takes me less than 45 min. To me, 45 min every 2 weeks is worth it to me - but i understand the convenience of pre-made raw too. I think I'm saving roughly 50% compared to what I was spending on canned food (but that may be different for you depending on your area and sourcing protein, etc). Hope this helps with some of your questions

I was feeding nature's variety and suddenly my baby doesnt like it anymore he just doesnt eat it. He isnt sick cause he eats canned and he will eat his dry and he acts normal. but I guess he is so over it. Im not brave enough to do raw cause im in nursing school right now and literally barely have time to breathe. I am supper bummed about the NV thing

Going raw when we move into our new house! Just have to find a local butcher that I can cut a deal with and educate myself on the supplementing.

I have made my own from whole meats---waaaaaaay too labor intensive for me. I can't afford Nature's Variety or the commercially prepared raw diets and my cats wouldn't eat the NV anyway. I did like a powder supplement that I added to water and ground turkey that my cats loved from a place called feline instincts. That was easy, but it was pricey also. When you have 8 to feed, cost is a real factor. It is important that you vary the type of protein you feed cats because they get horribly stuck in their ways and if you only feed one thing and for some reason you can't get it, your cat may refuse to eat anything else. And contrary to logical thought, starving a cat will not necessarily make you cat eat what it is that you are hoping to force him to eat, and might possibly damage him permanently by causing liver damage in as little as 24 hours. Anyway, I started using the same supplier that Dr. Spock uses--but I have not always stayed true to the raw feeding. I have to worry about what new owners are going to feed my kits and it makes me worry about changing foods all the time. But I have decided recently to get back on the raw wagon--for the good of my cats.

I don't have a store near me that carries the raw diet and the cost of the food on top of shipping charges makes it too expensive to order online. Can anyone tell me of a less expensive web site?

Join the Yahoo Group called: Carnivorefeed-suppliers (you may have to register if you don't have a yahoo account)... There is a data base that lists all the suppliers in USA and Canada plus their website (if they have one). If they don't have a web site, just send them an email requesting for a list of products and prices. I get my raw from MyPetCarnivore.com and they deliver to many parts of US... Check their Shipping Schedule to see if there is a drop off near you...

I signed up for the Carnivorefeed-supplier group and Im still waiting for the admin to authorize me. Its been about a month?! Is that normal?
