We have three cats, 2 Sphynx and a domestic shorthair...
somehow kennel cough managed to make it's way into the house :yuck:
My guy 5e, and Meow, the DSH have had a bit of sniffles and sneezes, but they are eating and drinking, just obviously feeling under the weather...

Unfortunately my wife's baby, Pharaoh isn't doing so well -- he hasn't eaten or drank willingly since Friday and was down to 8 pounds from his normal 9 when we took him to the vet on Saturday afternoon.

he has improved a little with the antibiotics, but I'm afraid it won't be fast enough. I'm doing everything that can be done... I'm just don't want to be digging a kitty grave over my holidays (or really ever:arghh:)

we've forced some nutrient paste in him every day -- it should be enough to prevent the liver issue cats can get when not eating, and we're getting about 50 mls of water in him daily -about 150 mls all over everything else.

Please cross your fingers, pray, and/or keep Pharaoh in your thoughts --

//the fact that he's wheezing is the only thing that let me sleep the past 2 nights -- cause if I can hear him wheeze, I know he's breathing:cry:

Oh no. I am glad you reached out for us. Lair Prayers are sent! Can vet get your baby on a drip to really get the meds into his system faster? I am so sorry you are going through this.

Please keep us posted.

I'll keep updating, We'll be seeing the vet in about 2 hours. He doesn't look bad, I just know that without eating or drinking, the clock is ticking.

It sounds like he will benefit from a IV I hope not the case but if he will not eat more he needs something.
Maybe a change to a stronger antibiotic?

I hope the trip to the vet goes well and you report back with some good news.

Okay, back from the vet. Great vet, she doesn't think his situation is severe... yet.
She took him off the the two antibiotics we were giving him and and gave him a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot.
We are to force-feed him a can of recovery food tonight, and another tomorrow if he won't eat it on his own.

If he hasn't eaten, drank and used the litter box on his own by tomorrow night, she wants us to hospitalize him. Since getting home, he has wandered by the food and water dishes twice-- more interest than he's displayed for the past 2 days, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for the update. You might just need to wrap your baby up in a warm blanket from the dryer and force feed them. The warm blanket will help trust me. At least you /your vet have a game plan. Do not second guess yourself you know your baby better than anyone.

Final update for the night -- We forced 1/2 of a can of recovery food (mixed 1:1 with water).
He hated it and us. he actually swallowed about 1/2 of what we gave him, the rest ended up all over us, the couch, carpet and, yup, there's a spot on the ceiling.

After waiting for him to digest for an hour and getting ready to attempt the remaining food we spot the little bugger drinking the water fountain dry!:banghead:

So that's one of the 3 things (eat, drink and use litterbox) that he needs to do to avoid hospitalization. I really hope this trend continues.(y)
I'll post how's he's doing in the morning.

Praying for him.....and for you and your family. I know how stressful it is to have sick kitties in the house.

So glad to hear he was a little better last night- I hope he continues to improve and avoids the hospital stay! I'm sure you'd rather clean a little food off of the ceiling too!

Minimal news to report this morning:
We forced 1/4 of a can, we haven't seen him use the box yet. Of course, he could have gone while we were asleep. He didn't go and drink after force feeding this time, probably because with the amount he drank last night, I imagine he is well hydrated...
He looks better, and he's fighting us more. I'll be going home at noon to force feed again.
I think I'll weigh him at the same time. At his last checkup, he weighed 8.9 lbs Saturday he weighed 8lbs and last night at the vet he weighed 7.74 lbs I want to see how the force feeding and how much he drank has done for him -- not that the info will actually be useful at all but maybe it will be reassuring.

// looking at my writing I guess it shows that I didn't sleep well :sigh:

Are you force feeding with a syringe or your finger? I had a mess with the syringe and did better just slapping food on our girls tongue.

Did you think about trying Susi's glop recipe to help gain weight?

It's hard to sleep when our babies are sick. So sweet of you to go at lunch to check on her. She's lucky to have a dad like you! Wow! Couldn't get over the amount of weight she's lost in such a short time. Praying she's on the mend.
