Last Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, our beloved Kermit The Terrible breathed his last breath. He was able to stay home and was helped on his last journey by Bob and our wonderful visiting veterinarian, Blanche. Kermit was almost 20 years old and he lived a full, wonderful life.
I found Kermit when I went to the grocery store in Rapid City, SD in August 1995. A woman was standing outside the store with the smallest, cutest little white ball of fluff I had ever seen. I told her that if he was still there when I came out of the store, I would take him. I kind of don't think she even tried to give him to anyone else, and he joined our little clowder of Samson, our big gray male, and B.J., our black shorthair girl, at the age of 8 weeks old.
Kermit was absolutely an beautiful long-haired white kitten with golden eyes, and every little girl who saw him as a baby wanted to cuddle him. But he hated to be touched, and he would sit in my arms and just twitch and shudder when little girls petted him. But he never scratched or bit anybody, no matter how much he was picked up and petted. He earned his sobriquet, The Terrible, when he was a year old and learned how to snatch birds out of the air, despite wearing a bell. So he ended up wearing 2 bells all his life.
Kermit was very fond of the summer sun, to the point of spending his days in the winter going back and forth from the front door to the back door, peering outside and then coming back inside very disgusted because it was cold outside. We called it his search for summer.
Kermit was a wonderful cat and a wonderful companion who traveled with us from South Dakota to southern New Jersey to Las Vegas. He was my boy and our baby boy and he will be missed. But, because he loved to be brushed, I have about 4 pounds of his hair that I spin into yarn from time to time. I will be able to wear his memory in my sweaters for many years to come.
Goodbye our handsome man. We will miss you terribly.
