I’m reading up a bit on ketamine and its use in veterinary surgical procedures. We’re getting ready to have Mika spayed. She’s about 9 months now and is still growing fast, eating well, and is a very energetic, healthy, happy, spoiled, kitty. So far, I haven’t seen anything in the reading I’m doing that has anything bad to say about the use of ketamine to spay kitties. For Mika, I’d be far more concerned about Methadone and Fentanyl and some of the others more than Ketamine. But Mika isn’t a Sphynx and the issues I’m seeing with Ketamine seem to be breed related? True or no?

Ketamine can be fatal if there is an underlying/unknown heart condition and unfortunately this breed is now seen as having more heart issues. So avoiding Ketamine is suggested. So it is sort of a breed thing, but there are several other breeds as well with more heart concerns. My vet uses propofol. I remind my vet every time they have been spayed or neutered. @LadyAred
Many vets don’t even use Ketamine these days. You can call your veterinary hospital and ask what anesthesia they use and you can read up on it before you have the procedure done.

It’s understandable to want to know exactly what’s going into Mika’s system before her surgery. From what I understand, ketamine isn’t generally considered a breed-specific concern in cats, but every cat can react differently depending on their health and the anesthetic combination. I’d ask the vet about the full protocol and why they recommend it for Mika. Hope her spay goes smoothly!
