Admin, this is not a point I am debating. I in fact stated CLEARLY that I agreed with that aspect of the original post, but it was my opinion a breeder who scans would be more apt at other aspects of health care then a BYBer who did not scan. I also clearly stipulated that just because a breeder scans doesn't mean they are great, but a breeder who does NOT scan is most certainly unethical. Although I am sure you have now slowed down, read, digested and are now fully aware of the information and opinion given in each of my posts.

as someone who has recently been owned by 2 lovely sphynx, i definately agree that i may have placed higher importance on the HCM than other health issues just like ilovemysphynx mentioned. i am super lucky becasue my breeder was amazing and she happens to screen for pretty much everything, and hasn't had any major issues in her cattery (that i know of). and thinking back... if i had just picked someone who scans for HCM and that's it, i may have run my self into a few issues, knowing what i know now about catteries in general... (i am totally not an expert though... lol )

i mean, i totally researched the breed forever and realized all the possible complications that they can have... but i never even looked into what types of things can go wrong at a cattery etc ... i'm not saying that all catteries have issues by any means... i just wasn't aware about HOW careful they really had to be about stuff spreading around... and most of the time, if one cat gets it... poof they all get it (what ever "it" is) and all of a sudden that breeder can get a bad rep... and they may not even know how their cats got it in the first place...

it's hard work for a lot of breeders, and i think it is important that HCM is a big concern, but that we as "customers" (?) / owners are usually unaware of the "other" things that could go wrong... like me... i had no idea cats got occular herpes untill about 2 months ago!! holy cow! so i like that this thread was posted, and that it serves as a reminder that we just need to look out for those "other" things too... cause any heartbreak is still a heartbreak... and we would all be devistated if a little one came home with giuardia (sp?) or occular herpes, or ear mites

and lets not forget that some people are just in it to make $$$ and don't give a hoot what happens while they breed or after... so we need to be cautious of that to... and not just with sphynx... we should be carefull with all our lovely pets! (for example my parents bought a beagle from a breeder only to find out later that the poor guy's parents were brother and sister from the same litter... and he regularly let siblings breed... our poor beagle died at 5 :-( ..)

I will not buy from a breeder just because they scan for HCM.
They must care about the heath also and not be in it for the money.
