Light eye shine test

Is the light eye shine test accurate? My little girl is 3 weeks old. The breeder says she will have blue eyes, going by the light shine test, her eyes are reflecting red.
How accurate is this test? Her mum has spearmint green eyes and her dad has blue eyes. She isn't a point or mink. Neither is her dad.

I'm sorry, I have never heard of such a thing. You can usually tell a kittens true eye color at about 3 months. I guess what she may be referencing is the The tapetum lucidum - which is sort of like a colored mirror behind the cats' retinas.

The light reflected by the tapetum helps the cat see better at night or in any dimly lit environment. Cats with blue eyes, typically lack a tapetum lucidum. Like human beings, their eyes produce the red eye effect. But I would say that this would be a false discovery being a cats eye color takes approximately 3 months to change to it's adult true color and not the blue kittens are born with which would generate the red reflection.

What colors/patterns are the parents?

I went back to your other thread and looked at her pictures. Blue Creams (blue torties) usually have green eyes. That’s what our Millie is. Sometimes her eyes look like they have a blue tint to them but they are just green. I had her DNA tested and she isn’t and doesn’t carry point or sepia. Most blue cats have green eyes. There’s something about the dilute gene that makes eyes that would normally be gold (if the cat were black) turn to green when the cat is blue.

I’ve tried doing the “light test” but it didn’t really help me. Predicting based on genetics is way more accurate for me but I’m sure practice helps. I may be able to help explain how they could be blue if I know what her parents are but my best guess based on her photos is that her eyes will be green. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tortie with blue eyes that wasn’t pointed.

I will ask for pictures of her mum and dad today. The breeder classed her as blue & white. No mention of a tortie. She is very helpful. All her siblings apart from one are shining red. With the light test. In an older litter (now 9 weeks) all but 2 shined red. Obviously id love it if she had blue eyes. Her litter mates are white, lilac mink and blue solid.
