I'm experimenting with making self-warming mats/beds today.

To make them self-warming, I sandwiched a layer of foil emergency blanket between two layers of fleece. Then I lightly stuffed fiber fill between those layers, closed up the ends, and stitched a couple of rows across to help keep the fiber fill in place.

I don't *love* how these have turned out, but I think the kitties will like them. My next batch (if I make more) will use cotton batting rather than fiber fill, I think.

Fantastic idea! I wish I knew how to sew more than just buttons and had room for a sewing machine (make that sewing/craft area).

I had everything but the emergency blanket already, so it only cost me $2.50. If you had to go buy all the supplies, you'd end up spending as much as it would cost to buy a bed at PetSmart. But, you could probably make several.

Also, you could totally handsew these using a blanket stitch around the edge. You could handle a blanket stich no problem. :)

So cute! I make pads for our show cages the same way (but with batting) and it works great. I’ve even washed them and they washed fine which I was a little worried about.

That is good to hear! I was a little concerned about the washing process. Maybe these will survive like the batting did. :)
