TL;dr version: Max is doing great but having to be creative with getting him back on raw. What follows will hopefully help others trying out the raw diet.

My little naked Lord has certainly kept me on my toes with respect to his dietary situation. But since that seems to be "the worst" thing about Max, I consider myself lucky. He did freak me out with his sneezy sniffles, but in retrospect that was nothing compared to the full blown URIs I keep hearing about.

I digress.

Max came to me when he was 3 months old, eating a diet of Go! cat food (wet and kibble). I knew that I wanted to switch him to raw ASAP and did so 2 weeks after he moved in. I decided on using Better in the Raw.

I stupidly introduced him to a different protein every day, and while he took to eating the raw without any needed transition, he had horrible poops from my playing protein ping pong. So I decided to stick with chicken for a while and then introduce a new protein every now and again.

THEN, a month after doing great on the raw, he decided to start getting sick. After some experimentation, I could only conclude that the calcium ratio in the BitR was too much for his little system to handle. He was, after all, eating about a full pound (16 oz) of chicken + BitR every day.

That was when I decided to make his own raw from scratch so that I could completely control the ingredients. I ordered a grinder, supplements, and meats. I made a test batch of raw and... drumroll... he didn't want to eat it.

*facepalm*

By this time he'd been back on Go! for over a week, complete with stinky poos (and so much poo... OMG the poo!!!) and stinky food. LOL.

Moreover, I learned that the BitR mixture provided an odorous, and likely appealing, meal. When making real raw, there is no discernible scent.

I took the dish of raw and added Forti-Flora. This adds a stinkiness to it. He wouldn't eat that either.

I added a bit of pumpkin. He didn't bite.

I added a few drops of salmon oil on top. Still not interested.

I mixed in some Go! wet and finally... he ate that. Once he tucked into his bowl he cleaned it up nicely.

THEN came the next meal. I went straight to adding Go! and he didn't eat that. I was almost in tears. I crumbled some Stella and Chewy's on top. Again, he tucked in happily.

AND THE NEXT meal came... I added just some Go! and he ate that.

I know it can take a while to get them used to raw, but I was utterly spoiled when he took to raw initially, without once pulling a face or walking away. I will be persistent and I know eventually he'll eat just the raw without fuss.

And the best thing? He's not sick from eating any more. I have the bone content at 8% (instead of 10%).

For Those Trying to Switch to Raw:

Don't give up. Try sprinkling or adding whatever is needed to make the raw appealing. Slowly reduce what you're adding.

I was surprised that neither Forti-Flora nor salmon oil was enticing, but that's the way with cats. We need to find what works. And when we do... hope they don't change their mind.

Thanks, @Catzzzmeow . While I know I do not HAVE to feed raw or take such great lengths, it makes me feel better. I take food very seriously for my health, so why not Max. Mind, I was looking at Weruva (I think it's called) and it looks quite good. But the expense would be quite high -- Max eats... a lot!

Still... I'm feeling better with each meal he eats. I'll feel completely confident a couple weeks from now I think.

Thanks, Patti!

One thing it could be that he's not hungry enough. The only problem with raw is we can't leave it out. You could try taking the food away and then putting it out later.

Other than that it's basically what you said, put something on the food to get his attention.

I'm copying and pasting from catinfo.org - this has to do with transitioning kibble eaters to wet food but I think the idea is the same.
  • Try sprinkling some parmesan cheese on the canned food. Most cats love parmesan cheese and this trick has been very successful for me.
  • Try a product called FortiFlora - feline version. Most cats LOVE FortiFlora and this has recently become my favorite trick. This is a probiotic made by Purina but you are not going to use it for its probiotic properties. You are just going to use it as a flavor enhancer. The base ingredient in FortiFlora is animal digest - the very substance that makes dry food so very enticing to cats. The directions say to use 1 package/day - and you can use this much if you want to - but this amount is not usually necessary. You may only need ~1/4 of a package - or much less - with part mixed into the food and part sprinkled on top of the food just as you would use salt and pepper on your own food.
  • FortiFlora can be purchased online but an easier product to find isTemptations treats. I trap a lot of feral cats for spaying/neutering purposes and this is one of the best baits that I can use. These tasty treats can be found at most pet stores. Put a few in a baggie and crush them with a hammer. Use the crushed treats as described for the FortiFlora above."

I feel your pain @Xandria . Glad you finally pinpointed what it was that was upsetting Max's tummy. It's helped me too. I'm pretty sure that's what was causing issues with Phiona too. Samara had no problem with it but Phiona must be more sensitive to it. anything other than raw isn't an option for her (GI issues) so that puts me in a tight spot. Phiona has been on a canned prescription diet and now comes the time to try to switch back to raw. It's like going from cheeseburgers to salads lol! I'll be trying Alnutrin and a commercial meat/bone/organ mix. Not my preference but I hope to get myself a grinder at some point.

I'd like to know how the Alnutrin works for you. I thought I'd go that road, but now that I'm making it from scratch, I might as well keep going in this direction. Grinding is also good stress relief ;-)

I'm happy to report that Max is happily eating quite a bit of the raw chicken with only a little bit of wet on top. I feel like I'm weaning him off opiates!

My kitties never took to raw, so I switched to Weruva. I spend about $100 a month in food for them. a case of 24 six ounce cans is about $66

Weruva looks great! I'm hoping the raw will carry Max, but if not, Weruva it is. Nice to know others have great experience with it.

So far Max is enjoying the new raw formula. So far. CATS! heee.

Lol it is hard to get them away from the canned! They love it so much. The Weruva is a good choice and Phiona likes it but she tends to have issues with her poops on it though :-( Not just smell which is awful but she tends to get unbalanced. Either too soft or backed up. It's not constant but every few months she'll cycle through a too soft or backed up episode. Which is why I went with raw. I just have a hard time keeping her on it!

Samara is on the Alnutrin and is loving it. I'm adding a small amount of the raw into Phionas canned. She's stopped eating around it so we are making progress! And it's a small amount too, barley half an oz mixed in with almost 4 oz of the canned. I ordered some Stella and Chewys from Amazon too. I still can't get it in my local pet food store. I know she'll eat that so I'm hoping it'll be easier to go to Stella and Chewys and then try mixing in the homemade raw. Keeping my fingers crossed!

That PDF is still a WIP (other things in life have kept me from returning to it), but here's the latest below. I hope it helps.

ABOUT A RAW FOOD DIET
3 RAW FOOD DIET OPTIONS
Purchase pre-made commercially available raw food (freeze dried and/or frozen-fresh)
Make food with raw ingredients (Animal + Nutritional Supplements)
Make food with raw Animal (with or without bone) + Nutritional Mix In (i.e. Better in the Raw or Alnutrin)

ANIMAL PERCENTAGES
80–85% meat (muscle meat, heart, fat, skin, sinew, tendons, cartilage, and soft connective tissue)
10% edible bone
5% liver
5% organs (consider lung, kidney, pancreas...) or more meat
* 20% fat content maximum (skin is considered a fat)

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
Raw egg yolks
Bone Meal powder (for Calcium if not using real bone in recipe)
Taurine
Fish oil (but NOT cod liver oil)
Vitamin B-50
Vitamin E
Lite iodized salt (with iodine)
Psyllium husk powder (optional)
* See individual recipes from Raw Food Resources below for precise amounts
* NOW supplement products are linked to as they're available in most countries, but you can buy any brand provided the item is the same. Use links as a guide.

NUTRITIONAL MIX IN (most popular)
Better in the Raw (use meat WITHOUT bone only)
Alnutrin (use meat with or without bone based on product)

NUTRITIONAL MIX IN (other options)
TC Feline (use meat WITHOUT bone + egg yolk)
Feline Instincts (use meat WITHOUT bone + raw liver)
* Always investigate and compare ingredients with Mix Ins

MEAT NOTES
Use chicken livers (vitamin A & D) and hearts (for taurine) as opposed to beef livers.
Use chicken leg & thighs (does not need to be breasts), with skin.
Do not use pork as it upsets most cat tummies.
Chicken and turkey are good starting meats.
Meat may be ground, chunked, or even served in pieces.
Introduce new meats (i.e. beef, rabbit, lamb, camel, kangaroo, venison, etc.) after 1 month or so on chicken diet.
Introduce one new meat at a time (i.e. wait a few weeks before introducing another new meat).

FEEDING REGIMEN
Kittens -- 3-4 times per day
Adults -- 2-3 times per day
As much as they will eat in about 30 minutes of each meal which usually translates to 50-100 g per meal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
Add 250-500 mg of lysine to cat food twice per day to boost immune systems.

@Xandria , that's a really good summary.

This might be a typo but if one is not using the 5% "other organs" I think one would substitute additional liver, right? I usually only use liver because it's the easiest organ to find.

On the Alnutrin line you might want to say that it's for "meat with bones + organs." It's assumed there's liver in the recipe (for vitamin A).

We have finally gotten something that works for all our kiddos, we are doing BiTR and I grind up boneless skinless chicken thighs and breasts in a "chunky" grind. I add a little more water than it calls for as it seems that works best for them all, not too strong but not too weak. I made my biggest batch on Thursday (16lbs of meat) and it took FOREVER to put into the ice cube trays for freezing. I cover the top of each tray with plastic wrap and stack for freezing. They each get about 4 defrosted "meat cubes" each and I feed twice a day (morning and night). That amount seems to keep them well fed and content. Their poos are much better (Hattie and Sobe) but are still stinky.

That sounds great, @KansasSphynxMom . OMG, I did a huge batch recently and used my countertop mixer to mix it all up!! LOL

A chunky grind is nice!!! Gives them something to chew and works their little jaws and teeth. Also slows them down. Awesome! Sorry about some stinky poos though. I think some Sphynx just have massively stinky poops. LOL

The BiTR doesn't smell too good BEFORE they eat it, bet that contributes to the aroma AFTER lol. We are also putting L-lysine in the mix- really seems to have cleared Raskol's eyes! Raw seems the way to go with these guys, PITA, expensive, but worthwhile in the end I think.
