Vito has had allergy symptoms since March. He scratches until he chafes on his neck area. We did a food trial, changed laundry soaps, stopped using fabric softner etc. He was still itching so we put him on prednisolone and then tried to wean him off of it. The itching started again. We started cyclosporin which is usually good at controlling skin allergies. Now that we are weaning him off prednisolone the itching is starting again.

Pred is not good for kitties with heart conditions. The cyclosporin suppresses his immune system and my vet is not thrilled at me getting a kitten with Vito in this condition. I dont know if it is a blessing or a curse that the cyclosporin doesnt seem to be working. It is expensive $60/3weeks and means getting a kitten puts him at risk. The pred is not good for his heart. If I get a kitten the vet says to quarinteen for a month.

Vito needs a pal, but as it stands neither med are doing him any major favors in terms of health. Suggestions?

Checked for skin conditions like ringworm? Do you put clothes on him? Maybe he just can't handle clothes. Heat rash? How do you know it's allergy? Did you try all the food types in allergy food trial? Maybe kittie eczema if that even exists. Tried a dermatologist? I dunno... Tried medicated kittie wash?

Great thoughts. Negative for RW, clothes are rarely worn. Vet believes allergy based on symptoms. We did rabbit as his food trial. Both raw and canned. Have not tried derm yet but will def be revisiting. Id be happier if we could find a different solution.

Is it only Vito's neck that itches him?
Is there something new you are wearing (like a new lotion, laundry detergent for your clothing, a new soap/body wash, perfume, etc.)?

Oh, and we also did they hydrolized protein vet food trial. No, nothing new in terms of body wash, soap or shampoo. The itching all started with products we had always used. I even switched to all hypo allergenic products, we moved house and no change for better or worse.

I dont want him on eithe med, but the pred best controls symptoms and is bad for his heart condition. Yes, only itching on his neck.

No, I was just wondering if you were wearing a new perfume since the springtime and maybe Vito rubs his neck on you in those spots where you sprayed your perfume or something like that.

Hmm?

Have you tried Aveno or some oatmeal bath for him?

Does he wear a collar?

I dont wear perfume. When I do its body spray and I rarely use it. I had always used vet shampoo with aloe and oatmeal. We have used baby body wash with no issues. Currently using emu oil pet shampoo and that doesnt seem to be the culprit either.

He has a collar for special ocassions and has only worn it 3 times ever. He wears a harness approx once a week but the itching is higher on the neck. Im thinking about trying dermatologist soon. Its just that I have to go to vancouver which means a day off work and lots of planning.

Do you have a specialized pet food store near you that sells kangaroo? We have a pet store near me that specializes in pet food allergies and they say to try and put a pet on Kangaroo and potato if the pet cannot get away from food allergy symptoms. For some reason, Kangaroo and potato seem to be the most bland and least reactive for animals. I spoke to them in depth about Fluffy and my friends puppy. We got down to wheat being a problem for Fluffy, so we are back on Chicken but using fresh food (Fresh pet) as Moses needs some kind of grain because too much protein and he poops like a goose, he needs a binder. The fresh g
Food we use has potato, and peas.

What about grains? .... another idea... has he had bloodwork done? maybe his glands on his neck are having a spaz....Have you checked your house for plants? Maybe he is allergic to pollens or grass....
I really should direct my ideas towards my university(college) work LOL XD...

I can tell you why Kangaroo would be better (cause I am Australian and know lol).... Its actually a leaner meat, and they are not domesticated like cows, chickens, pigs, rabbits, sheep etc. I am not sure if there is even such thing as a kangaroo farm!!In country Australia, they are considered a pest. I know it sounds weird... but kangaroos have large populations and can do huge damage to cars without being injured. I have heard of people in the opposite side of the country from me doing kangaroo culling, and getting paid per kangaroo. So... lean, unprocessed, undomesticated (ever), and wild. Kangaroos are like pure muscle and I have never heard of a fat Kangaroo LOL!! We have so may ads promoting beef and lamb and steak... the healthier option is kangaroo.

PS. On a side note, no I don't eat Kangaroo. I am actually a vegetarian.

Hes on grain free and has been for sometime. No house plants. Allergies appeared in March and while we have an early blooming season here I dont think it would start that early. The vets said his glands feel normal, havent done bloodwork recently but will be in the next month or so. Checking corona titres and uri related stuff

Yes we have kangaroo but he wont eat it exclusivly. Plusvthere is the issue ofconstipation while on raw . He would cry and bleed and none of the usual remedies worked. Might try fresh pet again. He did well on it before the issues started.

There is an emu farm somewhere south of me, and they are supposed to make great burgers! I'd like to try an emu burger! I suppose I'd eat a kangaroo, never thought much about it. I'm allergic to beef, so I stick to white meats...so do my kitties, mostly because I never have it in the house and never bought it for Moses and when I got Fluffy she scarfed up my moms hamburger once, so I bought them beef and oooooh boy did they get sick!!

Well- if tey are going to draw blood work soon, look at his WBC count, specifically the A NC, his neutrophils. While long term preds could lower his immune system, if his WBC doesn't run low, I personally would not be overally concerned. It depends on the actual dose and if its considered high dose for a cat. If its just to control his itching, it shouldn't be tremendous.

The concern with the pred is it can cause chf in heart kitties. the cyclosporin lowers him immune sys. Vet is worried that a new kitten will cause him to get fip. He is likley positive for corona already and even if a new kitten did get fipbit doesnt mean vitos corona will mutate too. Chances of new kitten gettibg fip are 5% or less.

Vet wants kitten quarantined a month. I think a pal would be better for vito if the health risks are reasonablev

I guess my biggest question is if your cat had to stay on immuno suppressing drugs would you still get a kitten? I didnt tell you guys but my new baby was born on Saturday!

Ohhhh, I feel so awful. Here you are so excited about your new baby being born on Saturday and you can't even get all excited yet because of Vito's issue on his neck and the meds he is on. :(

Just thinking...I guess you didn't change kitty litter brands either, right?

Did you first try topical ointments/creams? What about Benadryl?

Nope, started before we had granite counters we were still at the old place. Been using water and dish soap on them just incase.
