Hello Fellow Sphynx Lovers!
I signed on today to simply have a forum to vent and a place to connect with the possible future home of my newly adopted Sphynx, Ka. Why a "future home"? Because as much as I love our new pet, and he loves us, my husband's wheezing and coughing is making him and all of us miserable.
I've been researching the Sphynx for several months, having fallen in love with the breed at a cat show last year in my area. I lost my Afghan hound after 13 years and decided against another dog, yet I craved more inter-action than an average cat would provide.
FINALLY in our local classifieds I found an owner who had to move and part with her cat for lack of time to spend with him. She was shutting him up alone in her apartment while at work, and was looking for a good home for him with people who could give him the attention he craved. We thought we were those people, until I walked in the door with him and my husband started coughing!
So anyway, Ka is on my desk as I write this. He is with me constantly when I'm at home, and my poor husband keeps saying, "just give it some time" as he wheezes!
I love this cat, but I have to admit I love my husband a bit more, so I've now posted ads on several pet sites. For the time we have him, Ka is a beloved member of our clan, and we play with him, hug him and wrap him in blankets and love.
I was so naive to think that lack of hair meant lack of allergies! Silly me. At least I get to spend time in the presence of this unique and wonderful cat for as long as it takes to find him a home that is as good as ours for him.
I hope someone can learn from this. Please check out your reaction before purchasing a Sphynx. This is not an easy situation, from any perspective, especially Ka's.
