Hi everyone! I have a beeeaautiful male sphynx. He's my everything. He's 3 years old and I moved out of my parents' house (where there were other animals and my dad is retired) into a house of my own with my fiancé 5 months ago. Since then, I've been feeling terrible about my boy being left alone in the house ALL day and sometimes until 7 or 8:00 at night if we have something to do.

So I decided I get a buddy for him. I have a new 5 month old male sphynx named Ari and my older cat (his name is Thales), hates him!

Ok, so this what has happened so far:

I brought Ari home on Tuesday night. I immediately took him to the bathroom upstairs to wash him so he didn't smell as foreign to Thales. We set him up a room upstairs. Thales likes to sleep in the bed in our spare bedroom so I made sure not to use that room. Foolishly, my fiancé and I brought Ari in the carrier down to the main floor to meet Thales and Thales immediately started hissing like crazy and growling so I put Ari back up to his room. After doing some reading, I realize I shouldn't have had them see each other that soon.

Ari is a super relaxed, loving little kitten. He is happy and not stressed thankfully. He also barely seems to notice Thales freaking out at him. He's not phased by it at all.

Tuesday night, my fiancé slept with Ari, and I slept in Thales' room with him so nobody felt neglected.

On Wednesday, the next day, every time I'd go into Ari's room to give him company and then later tried to touch Thales later, Thales could smell Ari on my hands and he'd hiss and growl at me and my hands. He wouldn't let me touch him. I didn't try to introduce them face to face yesterday. I took the blanket Ari was sleeping on and put it downstairs in the kitchen so Thales would be around it. He hissed at it like crazy. Hated the blanket. I thought if he hates the blanket that much, it's next not to try another step yet.

Last night, I slept with Thales in his bed again and my fiancé slept in Ari's room. Thales ends up being his cuddly normal self when we sleep.

Today. Today Thales could go near the blanket without hissing and I took a new blanket that had fresh Ari's scent on it and put it beat a spot Thales likes to sit. He smelled it, but was able to just walk over it without freaking out. Progress. I decided to take some tuna juice and give a little to Thales on the outside of the door of Ari's room and give Ari some on his side with the door cracked open a bit. Thales slowly approached the juice, had a couple licks, then just hissed and growled again. So that was that.

Now what?! Will Thales always hate Ari? Ari is so lovable. Oh, and I am trying to be as loving as possible with Thales. When he lets me :( I'm trying to let him know he's my number one boy.

I'm getting so sick of little Ari being caged in a room by himself. He's so social. And he wants to discover the house.

Please if anyone has any experience or ideas as to what to do next, that would be wonderful!!! How long do I need to keep Ari locked in one room??

Thanks you so much guys!!!!!

Welcome to the Lair and congrats on your new baby!

When we brought Emma Leigh home we kept her in the master bedroom for the first few days and then put up a baby gate at our master bedroom door and started to introduce them with food. They did their hissing and growls, but eventually we were able to remove the gate and it took about 2 weeks before they were accepting each others existence.

We have 2 male DSH who now love Emma Leigh, and a female Somali who tolerates her (we've now had Emma Leigh for about 18 months).

Good luck and I recommend looking up Jackson Galaxy on YouTube for some great recommendations on socialization techniques.

Can't wait to see pics

You are on the right track. Give them both blankets that smell like the other. Feed them all their meals on opposite sides of the door. Eventually feed Ari in his crate and Thales near it where he can see and smell him.

This can go on for up to two weeks. Make sure you give Ari a chance to explore the rest of the house while your hubby has cuddle time with Thales in your bedroom.

When the time comes for introductions love on Thales and let Ari explore. Dont interfere too much unless someone is getting hurt. Interfering and scooping up either one is like a reward for not getting along.

Keep at it you are still in early days.

Thank you so much for your help!

As an update, Thales is no longer hissing like crazy! They're actually...playing today!! Well, at least I'm pretty sure they're playing. Haha Nobody had gotten hurt yet. :)

I feel SO much better! I think Thales just might come around to liking the little guy.

Hi Heather and welcome to the Lair. Thales will come around I'm sure and it's promising to hear about the slow process and them playing together.

Best of luck. Keep us updated on their progress. By the way, I wouldn't leave them both together unattended just yet.

you just gotta let them get all their hisses outta their system. Kittens are usually easy to integrate so it is good to hear they are already playing.
Welcome to the Lair also.

It takes a week or two - (sometimes a bit more) for them to become roomies! See this thread -http://www.sphynxlair.com/f53/introducing-new-adult-sphynx-cat-sphynx-kitten-into-home-11304/

WELCOME, Just take it slow and steady there will be days when they seem better and then maybe regress for a day doing the I'm the boss thing. I had the most problem introducing my 2yr old rehomed female to the clan. It sometimes takes a few weeks. Sounds like things are moving in the right direction.

They'll get there. You just have to be patient. And, they may not like each other and only 'tolerate' each other. But, as my Vet says, "They'll work it out".
