New Sphynx Owner

Hi,

My name is Tammy. I just "rescued" my first Sphynx cat.. He is 1.5 years old. We are in love with him already. We are "cat" people but haven't had a s Sphnyx before.. WOW.. He is something else .. We are totally not used to a cat following us around the house like our dogs .. I love it ... The first night he was with us he did sleep under our bed but last night he was up and about and ending up sleeping on my pillow under the covers...


He might some litter box issues so we will see how it goes..Any suggestions on how to prevent this might be great.. His previous onwer stated that he started having a few issues about 6 months ago. He apparently didn't get along with the older cat she had in her household... We have another cat and just keeping them apart for now..anyway.. So far so good..

Welcome, Once you have a sphynx, you never go back! They are the most wonderful of breeds. We like pictures, so please send us some.
Maybe he had litter box issues and thats why the owner gave him up. Is he on good quality foods? Raw?....Maybe give him his own box

One of my favorite things on the Lair is hearing from people who have rescued one (or more) of these wonderful babies! Congratulations!

Be sure to show him his litter box often and keep it very clean. Hopefully, he will take right to it and not have any problems! And yes, it is important to give him a high quality food and plenty of fresh water.

Welcome to the Lair! So glad you joined our little community. If you have trouble with the litter bos, they sell a product called Cat Attract ( I think that's what it's called anyway--which you add to the litter and it supposedly attracts them to use it. I believe you can also by litter that is already treated with it....

Welcome! I too rescued my first Sphynx & share the litter box issue! We have had Pear for almost 2 years, & sadly, his litter box issue is literally a never ending & constant battle.

We clean up puddles of pee next to completely clean litter boxes every day & scrape poop off of our once beautiful hardwood floors every day. We did all of the medical testing at the vet, almost $600 later, we have a cat in perfect health.

We tried every type of litter under the sun, crystals seem to be his favorite, but 2 days after we switch, he is right back to the floor, or some corner in my house.

We have 3 Sphynx & 4 litter boxes. So the number of boxes isn't an issue.

We tried to place new litter boxes in his favorite spots, it would help for 1-2 days, but then he would just find a new favorite spot.

Don't laugh, I even tried puppy pads, I would put them in his favorite corner & yes, he would go on the pads, but then get bored & would poop around the pads. So we would add more pads, giving him a larger area, guess what? He would just find another corner.

We tried locking him in the bathroom (tile floor!) with a brand new, fresh clean litter box with his favorite litter, crystals. I would get home everyday to a really pissed off cat & a puddle of pee right in the doorway of the bathroom.

Litter box attractants didn't work for even 5 minutes. Changing food just gave him diarrhea & a bigger, smellier mess for me to clean up.

The vet has determined that he simply has a dominance issue. He wants to be the only cat & won't use the boxes to prove his "point" -- not my idea of getting the other sphynx out of the house, especially since they use the litter boxes! haha...

So I have resigned to cleaning up poop & pee loyally, bleach is my favorite friend, paper towels are a never ending bill & Pear is happily pooping in new places everyday! It is disgusting & I absolutely can't stand it. When I adopted him, I made a commitment to take care of him, bad habits & all for the rest of his kitty life.

I REALLY hope for your sake you can find something that works, it can be more then frustrating & really trying on ones patience. I guess love trumps all, but it sure would be nice if he would just use the darn boxes! Again, welcome & GOOD LUCK!
