Only dry food ???

I've just got back from the vets, where I was told that I should only feed my Sphynx dry food, and always the same food. This, she explained, is because the Sphynx is known for a sensitive stomach etc.
Has anybody else had such advice ?

Sphynx are known for having a sensitive stomach, but I have never heard the advice to stick to only dry food.

Instead, I would find a food that works well for sphynx with sensitive stomach eg. Royal canin special 33 and like the vet suggested stick to that food. Be careful with treats that might upset the tummy. If you are having runny poop issues you could try offering plain pumpkin too as this will help firm it up.

I know a good number of people on here feed dry with a few pouches of wet.

I don't think it's the wet vs dry food that is an issue it's the type of food / what's inside.

No!
Years ago all the vets suggested dry food only for dogs and cats. They said it's much better for their teeth (that the wet food would accumulate on their teeth and make their teeth very dirty).
Now they are finding that either food can make their teeth dirty and HOW IMPORTANT it is to give pets wet food because of the water content...most especially cats and more importantly male cats.

I leave dry food out for my sphynx family all day/night long, but I give them canned food and add a bit of water to that as well. Most of my sphynx family drinks a lot of water, but I like to be sure that they are getting plenty of it.

There are canned foods out there that won't disturb their sensitive stomachs such as: Royal Canin has a specific dry and canned for that. I use the dry one and don't give them the canned one as I recently found out about it. I never change their diet and I don't even give them treats.

I use pure pumpkin (a spoonful) mixed in with their wet food which controls their stool from being loose!

Whatever you do, plesae don't give your sphynx only dry food. It's so unhealthy.

That's funny, my vet said only wet food fed 3 x a day....cats need the water content. She said minimal amount of dry if at all. Helped solve our guys digestive issues! Read up on it,new literature suggests wet food should be their primary source of feeding...

Wow so many mixed ideas on what they should eat!! Originally when I got Taz, his breeder hated Royal Canin, said so many bad things about it.. but now I hear so many people on here loving it. And also, I heard from Billie's breeder that there should be no wet food, and minimal treats. What to do, what to do!!

However, the more I read about dry food only,,,,, do your own research, ask questions and then make a plan that works for you and your kitty. Everyone has an opinion on what is best, what works for them but it is only suggestions. I'm thankful for all the suggestions on this community and as a result have found a plan that works for my kitty. It might not be what the next person uses but it works for us!
Pumpkin alone didn't solve our " poop problems". We've stopped using it for now. He liked it, I thnk I needed to figure out how much was enough.
RC dry made our kitten worse! Terribly worse! Could have been other things in combination with it but it was not agreeing with him at all!
Grain free helped, so did feeding wet grain free only.
Raw seems to have totally solved our digestive issue thus far.....
Just like raising kids, everyone had an opinion, it's up to you to take all the advice and figure your way through it the best you can.

Growing up, we only fed our animals dry food. Wet foods were only used as occasional treats. They were fine. It's better for their teeth, anyway. Even we humans are encouraged to include crunchy foods in our diet. I primarily feed my two dry food, but give them Honest Kitchen's mix once a day, when I remember. Twice a day for a couple weeks to help clear up Nym's cough. Gotta up the fluids when you're under the weather.

Dry food only can cause FLUTD and kidney problems a combination is required if possible you need to check your cat bowel and wind movements and skin to reach a conclusion at what is best to feed of course avoid anything artificial and known allergens

I would also consider another vet if possible they are hard to find this forum is very essential

I guess that just goes to show that everyone can have their own opinion, but what's best is what's best for the INDIVIDUAL Kittie. One cat could easily tolerate a food that gives another a tummy ache. We just need to pay attention and know our babies.

I'm in the same situation...giz currently gets dry food only. He has a very sensitive stomach and I don't even know where to start or what wet food to try first. I'm gonna do my research. Where can I get pumpkin ?

My late boy Ickus used to LOVE his "crunchies," but after 2 trips to the E.R. for urinary crystals/blockage I moved him to wet only. He never had another urinary problem after that. So, I am sold on giving primarily wet. Maybe urinary crystals are less of a concern for your little girl, but make sure she's getting her water somehow!

Absolutely not. What a horrible vet. I would change. Honestly I've found that doing research at home is the best way to learn about the best way to care for your cat. Check out this site. It is a wealth of information on feeding.
