Hello all, my name is Brandi. This is my first time being owned by a Sphynx as well as my first time to belong to a forum.
I want to start by thanking Sphynx Lair for making this forum, I don't know what I do without it.
At little bit about us. I first became intrigued with the Sphynx after seeing Austin Powers what a stunning creature! I have always been a dog person and found cats to be aloof.
About four years ago my partner and I started having baby fever, we have two two legged children that are 8 & 15 already. This continued for a couple years and then my son changed into a teen and with the struggles we were facing with him we started to question if we really wanted another two legged child.
Around this time a friend sent me a picture of the cutest lil nakie baby and I was enamored. I started reading about Sphynx and as I read more I knew I had to have one join our family. High maintenance, yes please. As mentioned before I wanted a baby to care for.
I started apply at rescues and ask breeders questions. With such a huge commitment I wanted to make sure this was a good fit for our family.
I found an ad on an adoption site for a pair of kittens out of Kansas that was adorable so I talked it over with my partner and got the green light. I replied to that ad and soon got an email saying the kittens were still available. Yay!
After corresponding for a couple days, receiving lots of pics and preparing our home for our babies, the person told me they were going to take the kittens to a delivery company who would deliver them but I needed to pay the company $600 and that they wanted no fee for rehoming.
I was super worried about the kitties being delivered via freight company so I wrote back and said I would come get the kits instead. They wrote back that they were already dropped off at the delivery company and someone from there would contact me.
A few moments later I received an email that had tons of misspellings and seemed odd so I googled the address in the email and found it was an Wendy's. I then called the delivery company and said I would come pick the kittens up and was informed that I shouldn't because either way I had to pay for the service. I told them I didn't care and would happily pay upon my arrival.
Next I received an email from the person who placed the add stating that I was upsetting the company and as the email continued they just went off on me. I knew then it was definitely a scam and my heart was shattered.
I continued to be persistent in checking all the adoption sites I knew were legit. I found a beautiful adult female and she was 20 minutes away. We set up a time to visit. She was so sweet and immediately stole my heart so we put in an application and the shelter employee told me that they really wanted to place her in a home with a dog because she loved dogs.
So after talking with my partner we adopted a Corgi/Rottweiler pup and set up a time for the animals to meet. At the meet-up everything went well and the employee told me they would let me know in the next day or two.
Two days later I received a call letting me know that she went to a home that already had a Sphynx. Heart broken again but at least I had our pup Bruce Wayne to comfort me.
I decided I needed to get a cat soon so the pup knew how to behave with them. I started talking with the local breeders about retired adults but found most of them didn't care for dogs.
I saw an ad for a bambino and wanted to know more so I contacted them to ask questions. This is when I met Cynthia.
After hearing my story and about our family she said she had a perfect kitten for us. Cynthia had told me about this outgoing (crazy) cream male she had. I asked if we could come visit as I really wanted to make sure the kitten picked us as well.
Two days later I packed all my two legged family in the car and we drove three hours to meet Cynthia. Both of my human kids were disgusted by the breed until we got there and then they quickly changed their tune.
The crazy lil guy climbed into my lap and started purring up a storm. Cynthia commented on how she'd never seen him so calm. He chose me. <3
Cynthia said she would deliver him the following week after he got neutered and chipped. It was one of the longest weeks of my life but now I wake up every morning to my handsome prince and couldn't ask for anything more!
Sorry for such a long post but it has been a long journey.
Thank you all for answering all my questions and for making us feel welcome.
