My cat turned 3 yrs old this year. When I first brought him home at 12 weeks old for some reason he started peeing in this one particular corner of my house where I kept his water and food. I had no idea why. Most times he'd use the litter but sometimes he'd just pee in that corner by his water and food. Since then we have lived in two different residences and he has NEVER urinated outside his litter box. Never once. Flash forward to today and we're back in the house again. And without fail he's gone back to peeing in this corner. I thought OK, maybe he doesn't like his water/food so close to the litter, so I moved it. Bad move! That only made things worse because I was about to go to bed just now and I've discovered he is using the empty corner now to also defecate, which he's never done that before outside of the litter box.

Folks, I'm at my wit's ends here. I don't know what to do. I'm stressed out. I'm angry. I'm frustrated. I'm like so done. I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of my cat right now, I'm that fed up. I just don't understand and I can't talk to my cat and ask him what is he thinking. I took him to the vet already, so please don't tell me to take him in to get looked at. I'm told he's in perfect health. I've never caught him in the act, so it takes a while before I discover what he's done and my hardwood floors are taking a beating. Not to mention the smell. This problem is ruining my house and my relationship with my cat.

Please help me. I need advice ASAP.

It is evidently something about that spit in particular. I tend to be a bit extreme, but if the damage is there you may need to strip and refinish the floor in that area and replace the surrounding drywall. Then I personally would get a corner litter box and put in that spot. Basically it seems really engrained for him to go in that spot for some reason so it might be less stressful on everyone for you to work with him instead of against him. Just my thought on it. Hope you get the situation solved soon!

I agree with NorasMom in the way that you need to replace that corner with new wood and what not. He might smell something there like maybe another cat and is trying to cover its sent up. If you dont want to go that extreme, really try and clean it down and buy a whole different litter box and put it in that corner. Then everything will be free of smells and your kitty can start fresh.

Fiona had some problems in this area as well. She wasalso perfectly healthy. I tried many things, many boxes, different litters etc. It felt like I had tried everything! Luckily she peed in places that were easy to clean. Than I decided to yet another new litter and like magic it worked now she only uses her box! I'mao happy!

It's pretty much trail and error because every cat is different. Like others have suggested place a corner litter box to the corner he is using. You might want to try different types of litters. Search the web there are lot of helpful sites. It takes a lot patience but like for me there is always a solution. I struggled with this problem for about 5 months, hope you find a solution quicker. Also always remember that your cat is not doing it on purpose.

Best of luck!

Sorry to hear of your issue. As long as you ruled out illness via a vet visit, Please read this thread http://www.sphynxlair.com/f53/should-i-change-my-kitty-litter-brand-9897/

Has anything changed as of recent?

  • Food?
  • Litter?
  • Litter box location?
  • New pet in the home?
  • New person in the home?
These are some things that can cause peeing and pooping outside of the box.

First step - you need to get a good enzyme cleaner to get that corner cleaned up, that can be found at any pet store like Petsmart etc.

Hello everyone,

Thanks to those who replied and offered words of wisdom. As soon as I finished posting my message I had no choice but to put his other litter box in that corner, because I couldn't leave the spot empty or he'd just return there. And now he uses the bathroom in that spot EVERYDAY but it's all good, because it's inside the litter. However, it's sorta weird having his old litter box, which cannot be removed because it's built into the wall, right next to this other litter box. I now have two litter boxes next to each other. It makes sense now, but long term I don't want to keep the second litter box in that corner. I'll have to come up with an idea of something to put in that area. Say a large plant, or something.

Oh, and my precious wood floors are stained but not completely destroyed. It's just much darker than the rest of the other flooring. But not so much that it'd warrant pulling them up and replacing them - at least for the time being.
