The vet worked her in for an emergency appt and diagnosed her with pyometra. The vet suspects the bacteria from the uti somehow got into her girly parts, probably from her licking. The antibiotics kept it at bay until now, but just weren't enough to cure it. She's having surgery at 9AM, and hopefully will make a full recovery. The vet is tentatively optimistic about her prognosis.

I'm kicking myself for not spaying her sooner. I've never before had a pet that wasn't fixed, and I have no idea what possessed me to not do it with her. I regret that decision wholeheartedly bc it almost killed her, and possibly still could. I'll never ever make that mistake again.

So glad they found the problem. I'm sure she'll be just fine now. Please don't beat yourself up. You had no idea this would happen. ::HUGS::

And as for not spaying, I grew up with a dachshund who was never spayed and lived to be 18 with no health problems ever--and we never had any veterinarian warn us about bacterial infections!

I'm sure this was unexpected, but thankfully there's a procedure that can help :) yay medicine !!

Im praying that Mudd is doing well in her surgery. Try to think positive, at least it was something they could diagnose and that there is a fix to that diagnosis.

I am so sorry! That's really scary to go through. I hope she's improving. I still worry about pyometria with the min pin we adopted because she was too old to spay. Sending wishes for a full recovery for Mudd! Keep us posted.

I pray that the hospital stay meds will knock out any infection. Poor Mudd. So sorry she has to go through this and you are stressing out. Wishing the very best and a super speedy recovery. :)

Don't feel so bad. Our last standard poodle didn't go into heat at all. No secondary sex characteristics, nothing. Finally when she was 4 almost five years old we had it done only to avoid possible female cancers.

The vet called and said she ate a few bites this morning. She's still not eating much, and still has a bit of diarrhea, but it may be from the meds. Still on fluids and antibiotics, but showing a bit of improvement. They're going to call me again to update me later this afternoon, but she should come home tomorrow! Thank you all so much for the prayers! She's 10 years old, so she's still got quite a recovery ahead, but I think she's going to be ok!

Thank you for the update. Yes, the diarrhea could be from the meds. Hopefully that will stop and she'll get her appetite back so she can get her energy back too. She's had a bad infection and now the surgery so she's not feeling well at all yet. I pray she has a speedy recovery and can come home tomorrow to your loving arms. :)

im so sorry to hear Mud is sick but happy that the vet got her in and that its a pyometra. Don't beat yourself up over it. How would you have known if the vet didnt talk to you about it. Stay positive. We get on average 1-3 pyo cases a year. and they have all pulled through it. Will be sending my prayers to you and the vet doing the surgery.
