Don't panic. You did the right thing by going to the vet. We all think the worst right away. Could be as simple as irritable bowels or ate something. They'll run tests to cross off the more serious stuff. Please let us know how you make out.

Agree, it is alarming to see blood there, but it doesn't always mean disaster... Good thoughts for Boogie at the vet!

Is it fresh, bright red blood? This is usually less worrying, as it means it the issue is in the lower digestive tract, such as a small tear inside due to hard stools or it could be parasites or impacted anal glands..

How are his poops? Loose or hard? Is he straining to go to the toilet?

Only if it has been happening for multiple days or when there is a lot of blood it is considered especially serious.

Fingers crossed the vet gives you some answers, try not to stress too much :)

Ohh glad i saw this post, my baby is nearly 6 month, when we first got him he was on wet & dry, i gradually reduced the wet so he was on just iams hairball like the breeder recommended, i started to notice bright red blood in his poo, he was at the vets to be chipped & neutured & went toilet there & they said it was a bit loose but they wasnt concerned as they saw no blood, they sent me home with the advice to put Blue back on the wet & dry food & me to be on poo-watch-duties, i still noticed a bit of blood but usually only in the mornings ??, my breeders great & really helpful she recommended canned pumpkin (not pie filler !!) I put a spoon full with every wet meal (mornin & teatime) & left the iams hairball down for the boys to pick at all day, 1 week on the pumpkin & his poo was lovely ( if u get what i mean lol) then a day or so after i stopped the pumpkin were back to square one, bloody mucus & slightly loose poo :( i dont really want to go running back to my vets as it was only 2 weeks ago Blue was there, i think i might change my vets, surely bloody-mucus isnt normal, & can my Blue stay on the pumpkin long term as he really enjoys it, im full of questions as a new mum & sorry to jump in on your post but been trying for a couple of days to work out how to ask a question on here, im slightly tech-thick !!! x

I think the pumpkin is not a problem, a lot of people supplement pumpkin to help with runny stools and it is not bad for them from what I have read.

You may want to speak to the vet about what might be causing it though - could you take a stool sample of the bloody, mucousy poop to the vet? They can test for parasites and other nasties.

You might also want to look into other types of food, if the vet rules out a parasite or health issue causing the poop problems. With dry, a lot of people on here have had good success with Royal Canin Special 33 / Royal Canin Sphynx 33. You can search on the site and find out what food has worked for people with a similar issue.

My boys are on pumpkin every single day mixed in with their wet food and a little bit of water and L-Lysine. I asked my vet when I first began doing this if they can have pumpkin every day. He said, "Yes!" So I've continued ever since. For the most part, Liam and Simon's poop is good, but Grayson has stomach issues. So I give Grayson a tad more pumpkin each day than the other boys. I also give them Royal Canin Special (for digestive issues). That combo along with the pumpkin has kept their poop issues from being out of hand like it used to be around here.

I was going to say more or less word for word what @zoinks replied to you.

I use pumpkin every single day and my vet said it was fine to do that. I use Royal Canin Special for digestive issues as well.

I just went thru this same thing with my cats. Metronidazole and Forti Flora, and finding the right food combo had worked for me, but it took a few weeks. Good luck and I hope Boogie feels better soon!

Agree on the pumpkin recommendation. I use a table spoon of pumpkin every day in both my girls wet food. I also feed Royal Canin Sensitive Stomach wet and Royal Canin Special 33 dry.

Since I have started the pumpkin routine, my girls poop like grown men

Where do you find the RC Sensitive Stomach wet food? I've never seen it?
