Hi friends!

Little Casper is giving us quite the scare. On Friday night, I received a text message from his breeder. Sometime during the day, while the family was out, Casper's mama moved her babies on to the floor vent because it was warm. When she did this, Casper's front paw got stuck in the vent.

That night, the breeder took him to the emergency vet's office, and they said there was no broken bones. He had some bruising, scrapes, and swelling, but otherwise had no serious injuries and was expected to make a full recovery.

All day Saturday he was purring away, feeling pretty good with his pain meds and alternating hot and cold compresses. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.

This morning, however, the breeder noticed his toes had turned black. Again, she took him to the emergency vet. He has no circulation in his toes, and there were talks of an amputation as high up as his elbow. Since he is so small, there is nothing to do for him at this point except wait.

I've assured the breeder that Casper is mine; I won't decline him if he needs an amputation. I love him too much already to give him up. I am really hoping, though, that he doesn't need an amputation and gets feeling better soon!

Tomorrow he will be going to see my breeder's regular vet. I'm hoping we get some more definite answers, or a definite plan of action. Until then, could I ask everyone to keep him in their thoughts (or prayers, if you're so inclined).

@NudieCutie, I am sending prayers to Casper and you both. You made my heart melt when you told the breeder that Casper is yours. I know that feeling all too well.
I hope that everything works out.

Oh poor baby!

I know this is a bit of a watch and wait situation, but I'd not wait too long. It sounds dramatic, but once circulation is compromised so severely, sometimes amputation done earlier can save more of the limb. Burns are awful to look at, but it looks like the nerves are likely damaged so on the positive side, hopefully he's not in much pain.

Mark the reddened areas with a pen so you can see whether it's receding or getting worse more easily, if your vet hasn't already done so.

And definitely prophylactic antibiotics are a must as burns are easily infected. And make sure he drinks plenty! I know he's not with you yet, so relay to the breeder. There's quite a fluid loss with burns, so it's important to keep him hydrated.

Oh that is so awful! I am terribly sorry to hear about this. I am sending positive thoughts to Casper for a speedy recovery. Hopefully you get some definitive answers soon. The breeder must feel awful.

Update!

Casper has met with the regular vet! We have GOOD news! AMAZING news!

Casper's skin is behaving similarly to the way we would behave to frost bite. Since the outer most layer of skin was deprived of proper circulation, it is turning black. Eventually, it will peel off. If there was any further damage, such as something that would require amputation, you would be able to see the inner layers of skin behaving in a similar way. However, that skin is healthy and pink!

So, the verdict is... NO amputation. NO signs of systemic shock. NO long-term damage. Now we wait for this dead skin to peel off, and he will be back to his normal self!

I just want to thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and kind words. It truly means so much to me that a community I've just recently joined rallied around for me and my beautiful baby boy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Oh my goodness, I'm so elated with this good news. I couldn't comment earlier as I was in shock and just very sad, I couldn't muster myself (I'm sorry). But I'm so glad all will potentially be well.

Positive and healing vibes your way.

@NudieCutie wonderful news! This makes me so happy. I'm glad though that you were going to stick it through regardless of the verdict. I'm so glad that Casper won't have to suffer with an operation though!
