To all that May be reading this post,
My dear sweet kitty Stella has just lost her battle to FIP. Stella was from the same cattery that Zeke was from. She was 10 months old and have been fighting her fight with dry form FIP for a while. This is a difficult disease to treat as you may all well know. My Family is heartbroken and sick about all that has transpired. I am in no condition to discuss details, but watching your little one struggle to stay alive as this disease progresses is something that I wish would never happen again. When contacting the breeder in reference to the outcome of my Stella"s condition and the concern I had as there have been other Kitties within the timeframe from her cattery that had died of FIP.( I will not mention a number, but there are more) The breeder responded in an unfavorable way with anger, hostility and profanity. As I understand, problems can arise. This is an ugly disease and there is sometimes outbreaks that happen that are not expected. I get it.... but why continue to sell your Kittens when you are aware there may be a problem. Is that being a responsible breeder ?? This woman does love her cats and I do not doubt that she may believe she is doing what is best. I was yelled at , accused of not taking care of my cat initially with "Clindamycin" as she suggested in the beginning when I had called to ask if any of her cats had food allergies as Stella was having a hard time digesting her food. Yes, she had offered to take her and try to fix her, I could not let her go as she was quite ill and needed one on one care. The cattery was not the right place for her. (this was a concern, do not want to get into that subject). I had been back and forth to the vet, who I very much respect and with whom had conferred with a feline internest at Cornell Vet school. The diagnosis had taken some time as dry FIP symptoms are not always in your face as fluid in the belly. The blood test were run, x,rays sample etc...protocol was followed, we helped her in every way we could. She was nothing but a little bag of bones in the end, brave and sweet as ever. I miss her and my heart hurts. Why this post? because I need to tell my story. I want to let others know so they can make an informed decision. The last words I heard from the breeder was_ leave me alone, you are haunting me, I am going to have a heart attack, my cat must of picked up Corona from the house I moved into ( The house was vacant for 6 months and no previous cats),and that I could shove something (could not understand what) up my @#$ ...on and on

I am so sorry. FIP is a horrific disease and in the last year we have seen a few members lose babies due to this..and in each case it is devastating. Please know we are here for you and perhaps some members might PM you to give extra support. I have no doubt your baby knew nothing but your love throughout all of this...please know that.

It is sad your breeder was not supportive. For her to say you are haunting her is disgraceful. You have been the one personally haunted by this disease.

RIP Stella....

Patti,
Thank you. I am really glad for this site as it has been a wealth of information that really was valuable while Stella was fighting this awful disease. I could not post prior as my time was taken up with keeping up with taking care of her and I was overwhelmed with what we were facing. I hope to be able to learn how this site operates and share my love for this beautiful breed. I have my Miss Dottie still with me. We will be doing baseline blood work . Just in case. I am praying for a miracle that she actually may be corona free. That would be a relief. Dottie and Stella were not litter mates and when Dottie came , she had her own set up, food, water and litter box. Amazing that they actually used their own boxes, their choice. There is nothing I can do to change what is. Thank you for your kind words and support. Happy New Year!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Our little Oliver tested positive for corona virus but thus far is symptom free. I don't know the future, but continue to love him everyday. Your little Stella was blessed to live her short life with such a loving mom. So sorry for your heartache.

I am so so sorry you lost Stella to FIP . I lost my beautiful Nala to FIP and it killed me watching her fade away while the problem was being worked out. Pm me if you need to talk. Once again I am so sorry for you and Stella :(

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet baby. It is SOOOOO hard to watch them fade away, but then to be abused by the breeder when you are looking for help is doubly horrible. RIP Stella. She is now at peace and one with all our lost babies.

I too have lost my baby of 8 months to FIP (dry). Rascal is etched in our hearts.
He went over the rainbow bridge on December 11th. Devastation (the word) doesn't come close to what owners go thru watching their beloved babies fight to live.
My heart is broken.
I too also got my kitten from the same breeder as Laurie L, and had the breeder tell me that I poison Rascal! How dare she say this! The breeder also said don't call me, you are going to give me a heart attack and that I was torturing her. Used bad language not professional at all.
After Rascal died, I got sad news that his brother pasted early in October of ? FIP (wet)
I am very concerned for this breeder is selling kittens that are going to their forever homes-- (owners not being informed of what could be a heart breaking future)
The breeder should take responsibility and do what is morally right.
No monies can bring my baby Rascal back, but telling my story and other people telling their stories about THIS BREEDER hopefully will save owners from the heart ache we had to endure.

@KimberlyRascal I am so sorry to hear that you also went through this. Your story and heartbreak do not go unnoticed. You are helping educate new owners to research and really dig. The health of the breed is so important to all of us. For all the new want to be Sphynx owners do your homework...do not shop price or proximity to where you live...shop for healthy kittens and breeders who promote the welfare of the kitten not themselves and really scrutinize the contracts. If and when you are ready, you have a whole community here to be an extra resource and support you.

I am so very very sorry to hear of your loss. I know that nothing can truly help the pain any less, but I felt so comforted by my SphynxLairians after losing Astor.

I am thinking of you--as we all are--and just know that you have a whole community of people who understand 100% the love and loss you feel for this incredible girl. We cannot know your particular pain--none of us will ever experience it in exactly the same way--but we know enough to respect how rich and satisfying a life with a treasured kitty is.

And although my heart hurts for you, it does grow fuller each time I see such examples of loving feline parents.

FIP is a truly tragic disease. I did some more research into it when we thought that Astor's kidney failure might have been FIP. The thing I remember most was a veterinarian telling the story of when he went to a conference and said, "If FIP were a dog disease, it would have been cured by now," and the audience erupted in applause.

So far Beetlejuice (from this chattery as well, we brought him home one year ago this month), has not shown any signs of fip, however was diagnosed with herpes. The breeder gave me some excuse about vaccines and said that they had caused his eyes to get infected and given him a cough.. We had another Peterbald (Lucifer) at home already, he was/is regularly taken to the vet and was always very healthy.. After bringing Beetlejuice home, Lucy started to cough and his eyes also became infected. Donna tried to blame me and said that there is no way he was infected by her cattery, demanded that I drive the 4 hours from NYC to bring him back to her. He also had behavioral issues like urinating outside of the litter box (ugh it still happens from time to time), at first it was so bad I was afraid he wouldn't be able to stay with me. He is so loving and cuddly and the boys are inseparable.. But the way this breeder handles situations like these is awful and unprofessional. She really needs to be shut down so that no one else has to deal with losing their pet. I'm so sorry for everyone's losses, had I known, I would have gotten my cat elsewhere. However, like I said, I am so in love with my sweet guy :)

I am so sorry for your loss. It's really unfortunate that some breeders act this way. Thank you for sharing and I hope this will reach someone else and save them from the agony you have gone through.

Hello All,

We just found out this past Friday that our 11 month old Sphynx, Zeke, has FIP and is going to die. 2 years ago we got our Canadian Sphynx, Normand, and this past year our roommate adopted Zeke because she loved Normand so much. Normand and Zeke are best friends. Zeke started to lose an extreme amount of weight about a month ago and his fever was extremely high. We brought him to the vet and the vet said he probably has a viral infection but that it could be treated with antibiotics. Well, after 2 weeks of antibiotics and no improvements, the vet suggested they do blood work. The blood work came back on Friday and he has FIP and is not going to make it. His stomach is slowly filling up with fluid and looks like he swallowed a grapefruit, all while continuing to lose weight. He is all bones and a big swollen belly. He just lays in is window seat and still eats in the mornings but we know he does not have much time left. We are cuddling him and loving him every chance we get, but we are so heartbroken and it feels so surreal. We had to separate Normand and Zeke and Normand knows something is wrong...he sits outside the door where Zeke is and just waits and cries to get in. I am concerned for Normand too. The vet said that Normand most likely now has coronavirus but it may never mutate into FIP....but it also may. We will never know until he too shows symptoms. Please pray for both my babies... Has anyone else lost a kitty do to FIP? How long until we should put him to sleep? The vet said to wait until he stops eating all together, but he is just so uncomfortable and its the most painful thing to watch him dying infront of our eyes.... Just so incredibly sad and heartbroken.
This is heartbreaking, stay strong, lots of love & prayers for zeke & yourself xxx

My heart breaks along with you ..I am so sorry for Zeke's terrible diagnosis. I recently went through Yoda's heart wrenching HCM diagnosis and loss.
Please please know we are here for you .. PM me anytime day or night..

I did a lot of questioning and soul searching for the answer to "when" ..
Too many of my babies have crossed the bridge , both young an old to illness.

No time is ever enough..

For me , (and everyone has their own "when" in their heart)
I spoiled and loved each day to the fullest.. I had to dig deep in my heart and soul for strength to be my babies best friend when they needed it most. To take the pain for them so they could be free and whole again. To give them the most selfless love. Someone once told me it was "quality of time not quantity" and I held onto to that over years. To allow them their dignity. Ultimately, it is up to you and Zeke... I am so so sorry your heart is breaking. We are all here for you..

I pray for peace and send big {{hugs}} to you and Zeke

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all that have and are coping with this devastating FIP.. I am so sorry

I am so glad to hear that Beetlejuice is doing well. It is so unfortunate that the response we had gotten from this breeder was so poor. It would be wonderful if all breeders conducted their business with integrity and honest practice, unfortunately there are a a few breeders that do not hold up to good practices in this profession. There is more to my story in reference to the communication with Donna concerning the Kittens I had purchased from her. We have another Cat besides Stella from this Cattery that has had some very odd health issues that are out of the ordinary. We actually have to now put funds away and budget in veterinary fees. We love our Dottie and glad that her health is improving. After our loss of Stella, we could not bear to loose another. For the sake of these kittens and the integrity of this breed I wish there were more rules and guidelines to protect those breeders that do it right and weed out those who run improper breeding programs. I stated to Donna that these kittens are not potato chips, these are living creatures . I told her she had a responsibility to the health of her cats. I dare not repeat the response. I would urge those considering to adopt from this breeder to ask questions and educate yourself.
