I'm not normally the type who would reach out like this, but I come asking tonight that if you could, please say some prayers for my best friend and soulmate - and our family.

If any of you remember, back in January, my best friend had some major problems with infection/sepsis and was in the ICU and had major back surgery for a spinal abscess. He spent over a month in the hospital before finally coming home. He was home for just a month. This weekend, he took a turn for the worse while I was out of town doing a fundraiser for work. He was admitted again to the hospital yesterday. This afternoon, they went in for surgery again and removed a good portion of tissue on his back (almost 12inches by 12inches and down by about 3-4inches). They took so much tissue they could not close the wound. The doctor called us in and told us they are afraid the infection is spreading and they will need to remove more tissue in another 2 days. He said if Eric's immune system and the antibiotics do not kick in over the next 24 hours, he is afraid Eric will not pull through this. I am devastated by this news. Eric is my best friend. His dad and my dad were also best friends, and I was introduced to Eric at age 6 - over 24 years ago (I am now 30, and Eric is 48). Eric is a quadriplegic, and to make a long story short, I have saved Eric's life a few times - I have always fixed him. I can't fix him. I can't make it better this time. I am Eric's health care proxy - these decisions are in my hands.

So please, if you could....say a prayer that these interventions start to work, I can't lose my best friend now...I just can't. Please add a little prayer that I help make the right decisions for my friend.

Thanks,
Jen

Oh Jen, I am hitting my knees right now. Praying that God heals Eric, guides the doctors in what they need to do, keeps Eric's spirits up and helps you know which decisions are the right ones to make. And finally, that He brings you peace and comforts your sorrow.
Much love,
Susi

How devastating! I will be praying that Eric makes it through this. I hope his immune system kicks in and does it's job and that no other procedures will be needed.

Thank you all. We all need as many thoughts and prayers as possible - to whomever.

I just got home from the hospital again. Eric is in good spirits, but we had a conversation about the seriousness of his situation. He and I have always talked about what each other has wanted as far as health care, so I know...

They will give him 1-2 more days to see how he does before operating again. They decided today he is not allowed out of bed, his spine is too unstable since they took out a good portion of the bone. Hopefully this does not cause too many problems - I am going to remain realistic about it, and try not to think the worst, but I've been around the block with him before, it isn't simple. I will remain cautiously optomistic things will go smoothly.

I had a chat with his SO (I am his HCP, but he has a g/f - I'm JUST...or just, or AM) the best friend - and at least she and I are on the same page with his care, and I promised her I will not make decisions without her. So that made me feel better - at least I am not alone. I don't feel his parents will make decisions in his best interest in this situation, they cannot remain objective here, and that I can understand. But we will do what ERIC wants, I will not take that control from him. I might not be able to change this for the world, but I can at least make it easier for him.

Last night, his parents were not giving him the full story and finally he turned to them and said "You, and You quit talking..[and pointed to me], Jen - YOU tell me what is going on, I trust YOU - GO". So we all know where the trust lies. I just need to do the right thing for him.

I know this isn't easy for any of you but I am very glad that Eric's g/f is on the same page as you. That makes a tough situation a bit easier. Eric is so very lucky to have you in his corner and knowing that you have his best interest and what he wants in mind he can focus on doing what needs to be done to get him through this.

I would rather be in your position than Eric's, but if I had to be in his, then I would want someone like YOU fighting with and for me. Hugs and Prayers to both you and Eric.

Hello Jen! I am so sorry this is happening to you & your friend. But he is fortunate to have an advocate such as yourself. As a nurse, I see families make unwise decisions for their loved ones ALL THE TIME. But it is very difficult for a parent or spouse to make those decisions! Prayers are going up for your friend's medical condition! Please keep us updated!

Hi all,
I know I've been a little scarce around the lair lately. I've been trying to keep up, but sometimes it's days before I can just sit down and read here or there!

My friend Eric is obviously still in the hospital and very sick. He has gone for multiple surgeries since I last posted. Most recently Last Friday he had to have surgery on his lung as his infection had spread and they had to go clean out the large area of infection that had collected there. He had chest tubes for the week that they finally removed. His back wound is still open and is now down to the bone. Hopefully it will remain as clean as possible and the antibiotics will do it's job.

Unfortunately for him we had to spend his birthday in the hospital and then another major anniversary (30yr for his accident to become a quad). Both in the same week. So that was very hard for him. He is in a lot of pain right now, and it's hard to just go and see him for a few min. Last week I had a case at the hospital he was at, and I had gone in to work at 7am, and stopped to see him at 1030pm, and went back to my case after that but was relieved at 6am the next morning and went to sit with him afterwards and he said "I know this is selfish but I want you to stay today" (since he was having his lung surgery) so I stayed there at the hospital and made sure he got through alright and woke up afterwards and saw me and finally got home around 6pm that night. I told him that he might be suffering since thought it was going to be a short day and didn't wear deodorant.

So if you guys wouldn't mind keeping the prayers coming, he still needs them right now. We can just hope the right medicines will do the trick.

Thanks for listening to my rambles, so much to tell, so little time.
Jen

Gosh, I apologize, but I must have missed this post last month as I was working lots of overtime. I am so sorry that your friend, Eric is going through this. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
