I buy a mix from www.hare-today.com that already has the right ratio of meat/bone/organ. I love it because I can order single proteins of soooo many kinds. Then I also buy Alnutrin supplement, which they also sell, and add 1 scoop (provided in the package) per pound meat. Then I add 3 pumps of fish oil per pound of meat. And also a little filtered water to give the food a good consistency but also add moisture. Usually 0.5-1cup per 5 pounds.

I second Hare Today OR Raw Feeding Miami. Raw Feeding Miami also sells grinds with the right mix of meat-bones-organs. You can compare them and see which one has lower prices and shipping costs. If you just want rabbit (which is a great option for a cat with a chicken allergy) you can also try Rabbits4U. I've bought from all 3 of them and they're all good.

I also second Alnutrin for the supplement but with an asterisk - see below. Be sure to get Alnutrin for meat with bones. Their website to buy directly is knowwhatyoufeed.com

* Alnutrin for meat with bone has an egg powder in it. I have it on good authority that being allergic to chicken doesn't make a cat allergic to eggs. It is 2 different allergies. However, it is possible for a cat to be allergic to BOTH chicken and eggs. If that is the case, you would need to use a different supplement. Alnutrin also makes a supplement without egg powder but it is only for boneless meat, so if you want to do that you would just buy boneless meat and liver. There is debate over whether real bones are better or not.

What exactly are kidney issues? I would not feed a CKD cat a regular raw diet. They need lower phosphorus. A lot of people (probably most) say lower protein too although this is debatable. But lower phosphorus for sure and you can't get there with a regular raw diet with bones.

Yes I agree. You can do the raw diet for sure with the kidney issues, but you have to be more careful with the recipe. I wonder if there is a good raw nutritionist that can help with that? @Condo commando I feel like you had recommended someone a nutritionist recently?

To answer your question @Yoda mom I buy what I think a cat could get in the wild. So I stick to poultry and small prey. I feed mostly chicken, turkey, duck, rabbit, but also occasionally quail or goose. They also have rat and cavie available (I’m allergic to both so I can’t feed it but it’s perfect for them biologically). I am not sure if I am allergic to mice, so I bought their 5 pack sampler and I’m going to try it. But since I’m allergic to other rodents I’m sure I’ll have issues and won’t be able to purchase it again. Still, crossing my fingers because I hate that the only small mammal I can feed is rabbit. It does seem to be a favorite though. (FYI rabbit is not a rodent, it is a lagomorph, hence I’m not allergic).

Yes - there is a veterinary nutrition service. They would ask for a copy of Macie's medical history and based on that create a custom recipe for her. The recipe(s) they give you won't use real bones; it will include just muscle meat, liver, and maybe hearts. They will use a supplement that includes calcium.

Having them create recipes for you costs less in the long run than buying expensive Rx food. However, you pay upfront for the consultation. The other thing is when you make food at home you would use human grade meats, whereas Rx diets use the same dead animal meat that goes into regular cat food.

I have never been someone that fed raw because it was raw. I do it because I want control over what goes into the food. Whether it's cooked or raw for me has always been secondary. My problem with commercial diets isn't that they're cooked; it's what goes into it. I can also confirm that my cat that's been eating a cooked recipe doesn't have smelly poo; it's just like if she was raw fed.

I’ve been working on raw transition with Jasmine for the past 2 days and it isn’t going very well. At least I got her off of kibble. But I really would like her to go raw.

Getting her off kibble is the first step. That's what I did with Henry too. Then it took me months to get Henry completely off canned food. I don't exaggerate. At first just like 1/8 of the portion was raw and 7/8 was canned. I would do that for almost a week and then go to 2/8 raw and 6/8 canned. It was SLOW.

At first it was just rabbit. Then to introduce chicken, I did 1/8 raw rabbit and 7/8 raw chicken. Then same thing, every few days add 1/8 chicken and take out 1/8 rabbit. He never really took to the chicken though. I mix some into his rabbit and call it a day.

Yeah I’m going to have to back off. I got too excited because the first meal I made was 1:3 raw to canned and she ate it no problem. So I did that a couple of times. But I tried 1:1 today and she would not touch it.

Thank you both for all of the info. So based on the calculation chart on the Raw Feeding Miami site my cat only needs 3.84 ounces of raw food daily based on her being 8 lbs with a 3% ratio to maintain weight.

It is coming out sooooo much cheaper to feed her raw! Am I’m sleep deprived and not understanding this correctly?

The Stella and Chewy food she is on now costs us $65 a week!

Keep in mind if you buy 1 lb of meat from Hare Today, you will add water to it and it will become about 1.25 lbs. So it actually comes out even cheaper. Although you do have to spend a little bit on Alnutrin.

If you buy rabbit, they sell it ground with fur OR without. If you get the one with fur you can feed it by itself. If you get the one without fur, the bone content is too high to feed by itself so you will need to add some boneless meat to it. I would use 1 lb of boneless meat for every 2 lbs of the dressed rabbit. Make sense?

I'd guess she needs between 200-250 calories per day. If you go with rabbit, figure 40 calories per ounce of rabbit.

So if we're talking just the meat, you could give her 6 ounces for 240 calories. But keep in mind when you add water, it adds about 25% extra weight. So 6 ounces before water would become about 7.5 ounces. You would need to feed her 7.5 ounces of the finished product to get the same 240 calories since water itself has no calories.

At the end of the day, you have to judge their body shape - if they seem too skinny you give a little more food, and if they seem too fat you cut back some.
